Branwell Brontë: The Tragic Brother Behind the Brontë Sisters Legacy

Well now, you’ve probably heard about them Brontë sisters, right? Them famous ones, Charlotte, Emily, and Anne, all them books they wrote that people still read today. But you know, there’s a fourth one in the family, the only boy among all them girls – Patrick Branwell Brontë. Now, he ain’t the one who got all the attention like his sisters, no sir. He had a bit of a rough go at things, poor fellow.

Branwell was born back in 1817, over in Thornton, Yorkshire. That’s a small place, like the village over yonder, if you ask me. He was the only boy in a family full of girls, so you might think he was spoiled or maybe got all the attention. But no, it didn’t turn out like that at all. His life was full of ups and downs, and not the good kind either. You see, Branwell had a lot of talent, he could paint a bit and he even tried his hand at writing, but he never really hit it big like his sisters did with their novels. He had too many demons in his own head, and that’s where things started to go wrong.

Now, Branwell wasn’t like his sisters who got all those books published and made a name for themselves. He tried to do his bit, but he just couldn’t seem to stay on the right track. He had a lot of struggles with drinking, and not just a little bit of drinking, mind you. He got addicted to alcohol and something called laudanum, which is a kind of medicine but it’s got opium in it, so it’s mighty addictive. That caused him a heap of trouble, poor soul. He had a hard time holding down jobs, and that didn’t help matters none.

It wasn’t just the drinking and the laudanum that troubled him though. Branwell had big dreams, but he couldn’t quite reach them. He wanted to be a painter, a writer, something grand, but it just didn’t work out. His work never got the recognition it deserved, and that put him in a bad place. He got to feeling low and bitter about it all, and that only made his troubles worse.

But even with all them problems, Branwell didn’t get forgotten altogether. He’s still part of the Brontë story, though he’s often remembered for all the wrong reasons. His sisters went on to write them famous novels, but Branwell’s life turned out different. He died young, at just 31 years old, on the 24th of September, 1848. That’s a real short life, ain’t it?

People remember Branwell for being the “mad, bad, and dangerous” brother. Ain’t that a shame? He had so much potential, but all them struggles with addiction and disappointment just dragged him down. His family, especially his sisters, always had to deal with his troubles, and I reckon that couldn’t have been easy for them either. But he was still part of the Brontë family, and even though his life was full of misfortune, it’s still tied to them girls and their success.

So, if you ever get to reading them Brontë books, don’t forget about Branwell. Maybe he wasn’t the one who made a name for himself like Charlotte or Emily, but he sure had a part to play in the whole family’s story. Sometimes, not all the stories are happy ones, but they’re all part of what makes up the whole picture, ain’t they?
