The Hansel and Gretel Poem: A Timeless Story of Survival and Adventure
Oh, deary me, let me tell ya a story, one that’s been passin’ down through the years. ‘Bout two little children, a boy named Hansel and a girl named Gretel. They lived in a poor cabin at the edge of a big ol’ forest. Their daddy, a woodcutter, didn’t have much, and their mama… well, she wasn’t too kind to them. They say it was a hard time back then, folks didn’t have much to eat, and the land wasn’t kind to them.
One day, their stepmother, all wicked and mean, decided that there wasn’t enough food for everyone. She told the poor woodcutter, their dad, that they should just go out into the woods and leave the little ones there, let ‘em fend for themselves. Now, that’s a cruel thing to do, ain’t it? I couldn’t imagine doin’ that to my own kin, but that’s what they done.
Well, Hansel, the little boy, he was clever. He knew his mama and papa was up to no good. So, he took some pebbles from the path and dropped ‘em behind him as they walked. When the time come, he used them pebbles to find his way back home. And sure enough, he did. But that wicked stepmother, she wasn’t done yet. She told the poor man to take them out again the next day. This time, Hansel didn’t have no pebbles, but he had crumbs of bread.
And wouldn’t ya know it, them crumbs didn’t stay on the ground long before the birds come along and ate ‘em up. Poor Hansel and Gretel was lost for good in that big ol’ forest. Now, they wandered for days, hungry, tired, and scared. But one day, when they was about to give up, they found somethin’ curious— a house made of candy, cookies, and all sorts of sweet things. It was like heaven to their bellies.
But little did they know, that house wasn’t what it seemed. It was a trap! The house belonged to a wicked ol’ witch who liked to eat little children. She invited them inside, all sweet-like, but as soon as they were in, she locked them up. She planned to fatten up Hansel and eat him, while Gretel was set to do the work. That witch, she was a bad one, no doubt about it.
Now, Hansel and Gretel, they weren’t no fools. They worked together, as they always did, and figured out a way to trick that old witch. Hansel, bless his heart, kept stickin’ his finger out of the bars so the witch couldn’t tell if he was getting fatter or not. And when the time come, they knew they had to act fast. Gretel, brave little thing, she shoved that witch into the oven and locked her up tight. That was the end of that ol’ witch!
Now, let me tell ya, after that, Hansel and Gretel was free. They found their way back home, and when they got there, that wicked stepmother was gone. They lived happily ever after with their daddy. And from that day on, they never went hungry again. They’d been through a lot, but they stuck together, and that made all the difference. That’s the moral of the story, you see? Stick together, work as a team, and you can make it through the toughest of times.
So, folks, when times get tough, don’t give up. And remember, workin’ together can help you find your way out of the darkest places. Just like Hansel and Gretel did. If they can make it through all that, well, we can too, can’t we?
