were shield maidens real
Well, let me tell ya, I’ve been hearin’ all sorts of things about these shield maidens. People keep askin’, were they real? Did they actually exist? Now, I ain’t no fancy professor or nothin’, just an old woman who’s seen a thing or two in her time.
From what I gather, these shield maidens were supposed to be tough women, warriors who fought alongside the men. They say there’s stories about ’em in old books and such. But lemme tell ya, just ’cause somethin’s written down don’t make it true. I mean, I could write a story about me flyin’ to the moon, but that don’t mean I actually did it, does it?
- Some say there’s proof in old graves, with weapons buried alongside women. But honestly, who’s to say those weapons were actually used by the women? Maybe they were just put there for some other reason. You never know.
- Then there’s the stories, the sagas they call ’em. They talk about these shield maidens fightin’ fierce battles. But stories are just that, stories. They can be made up, exaggerated, or changed over time. Kinda like that game of telephone, you know? By the time it gets to the end, it’s nothin’ like what it started out as.
I heard some folks sayin’ that these shield maiden stories weren’t meant to celebrate women warriors, but for somethin’ else entirely. Maybe they were just tryin’ to teach a lesson or somethin’. It’s hard to say for sure.
And then there’s this fella, Saxo, who wrote about these warrior women way back when. But people say his stories are mostly made up, not real history. So, can we really trust what he wrote? I don’t know, seems fishy to me.
Truth is, there ain’t much solid proof that these shield maidens were real. It’s mostly just stories and guesses. Sure, there mighta been some women who fought, but were they these legendary shield maidens? I ain’t convinced.
I mean, think about it. Back in those days, life was hard. Women had their work cut out for ’em just takin’ care of the home and family. When would they have had time to train for battle? And even if they did, would they really be sent out to fight? It just don’t seem likely to me.
Now, I ain’t sayin’ women ain’t strong. Heck, I know plenty of strong women. But fightin’ in battles with swords and shields? That’s a whole different story. It takes a lot of trainin’ and strength, and I reckon most women back then just didn’t have it.
So, were shield maidens real? I guess it depends on what you believe. If you wanna believe the stories, then sure, they were real. But if you want hard evidence, well, there ain’t much to go on.
Me? I’m a practical woman. I like to see things with my own eyes. And I ain’t seen no shield maidens, that’s for sure. So, I’ll just stick to what I know and leave the stories to the dreamers.
