santa fe commons
Listen, lemme tell ya ’bout this Santa Fe Commons place. Ain’t no fancy talk, just plain speakin’. It’s a buncha houses, see? All together, like chickens huddled in a coop. Folks livin’ there, they share stuff. Like, they got this big ol’ place where they eat together. Think of it like a potluck, every night. But fancier, I guess. They call it… uh… co-somethin’. Co-housin’? Sounds like somethin’ from them city folk.
They built these houses some time back. 1991, someone told me. Long time ago, eh? Guess they’re still standin’. Built ’em all at once, they say. Like ants buildin’ a mound. Quick and steady. On some land, four and a half acres, somethin’ like that. At the edge of Santa Fe. Guess that’s why they call it Santa Fe Commons. Commons, like common sense. Everyone usin’ the same stuff, sharin’.
Now, why would folks wanna live like that? I dunno. Maybe they lonely. Maybe they wanna save money. Maybe they just like bein’ around people all the time. Me? I like my space. Don’t need no one breathin’ down my neck. But, hey, to each their own. If they happy livin’ like that, good for ’em.
- They got houses, like I said.
- They got this big eatin’ place.
- They share tools, seems like. Like, a hammer or somethin’. Don’t gotta buy your own, I guess.
This one fella, he told me they buildin’ somethin’ else, too. Somethin’ for folks who ain’t got much money. Calls it “affordable housing.” Guess houses these days, they cost a pretty penny. Can’t blame folks for needin’ a cheaper place to live. This new thing, it’s in Tulare. West Tulare, he said. Guess they need houses there, too. Calls it Santa Fe Commons, just like the other one. Maybe they runnin’ out of names.
Sounds like a lot of work, buildin’ all them houses. Gotta dig holes, pour concrete, hammer nails. Back in my day, we built things to last. Hope they doin’ the same. Don’t want these houses fallin’ apart after a few years. Waste of time and money, that’d be.
I heard folks say it’s a good thing, this Santa Fe Commons. Helps people, they say. Gives ’em a place to live, a community. Maybe so. I ain’t gonna argue with that. As long as they ain’t botherin’ no one, I say let ’em be. Live and let live, that’s my motto.
So, there you have it. That’s what I know ’bout Santa Fe Commons. Not much, I admit. Just a buncha houses, folks sharin’ stuff. Maybe it’s good, maybe it ain’t. Depends on what you lookin’ for, I guess. Me? I’ll stick to my own place, thank you very much.
But if you lookin’ for somethin’ different, somethin’ communal, maybe this Santa Fe Commons is for you. Go check it out, see for yourself. Don’t take my word for it. I’m just an old lady, what do I know?
