Well, let me tell ya, some folks get their britches in a twist about God knowin’ everything and us still gettin’ to choose.
They say, if God knows what’s gonna happen, how can we really be free to do what we want? It’s like this, if the Almighty’s already seen it all, ain’t we just puppets on a string?
Now, I ain’t no fancy preacher or nothin’, but I’ve lived a good long while and seen a thing or two. And it seems to me, God bein’ all-knowin’ and us havin’ free will ain’t necessarily two peas in a different pod.
Some smarty-pants folks, they call it “theological fatalism.” Big words, I know. Basically, they think if God knows the future, then everything’s already set in stone. Like, if God knows I’m gonna eat grits for breakfast tomorrow, then I have to eat grits. No gettin’ around it.
But hold on a minute. Just ’cause God knows somethin’s gonna happen, does that mean He’s makin’ it happen? I don’t think so.
It’s like watchin’ your grandkids play in the yard. You know little Timmy’s gonna try and climb that old oak tree, even though you told him not to. And you know he’s probably gonna fall and scrape his knee. Does that mean you made him fall? Course not! You just knew it was comin’ because you know Timmy.
See, God ain’t stuck in time like us. We’re just livin’ in the “now,” but God, He sees it all at once – past, present, and future. It ain’t like He’s watchin’ a movie reel that’s already been filmed. It’s more like He’s watchin’ the whole play unfold, seein’ all the choices we make and how they play out.
- It ain’t about fate, it’s about choices. Just like that Bible story ’bout Joshua. He told folks, “Choose this day who you will serve.” God knew what they’d choose, but He still let them choose.
- God’s knowledge ain’t the same as control. He knows what we’ll do, but that don’t mean He’s pullin’ the strings. We still get to decide.
- Think of it like this: God’s watchin’ the parade, not causin’ it. He sees all the floats and the marchin’ bands, but the folks in the parade are still the ones doin’ the walkin’.
Now, some folks might argue and say that if God created everything, then He created our choices too. And if He created our choices, then how can they be free?
Well, that’s a head-scratcher, ain’t it? But I reckon it’s like this: God gave us the ability to choose, and that’s part of what makes us human. He didn’t make us robots. He gave us a mind and a heart to figure things out for ourselves.
It’s like when you bake a pie. You put all the ingredients together, but the way it bakes up, that depends on a lot of things – the oven temperature, the weather, even the kind of apples you use. God created the ingredients, but the pie still has its own way of turnin’ out.
So, does God know the future? Yeah, I believe He does. But does that mean we ain’t got free will? Naw, I don’t think so. We still get to choose, we still get to make our own mistakes and learn from ’em. And that’s the way it should be.
It ain’t easy to wrap your head around, but some things you just gotta take on faith. Like plantin’ seeds. You put ’em in the ground, and you trust they’ll grow, even if you can’t see it happenin’ right away. Same with God, I reckon. We gotta trust He knows what He’s doin’, even if we don’t always understand it.
And that, to me, is the long and short of it. God’s knowledge and our free will, they ain’t fightin’ each other. They’re workin’ together, somehow, in a way that’s bigger than my understandin’.
