Alright, let’s talk about them Constantinople paintings, you know, the pictures they made way back when. I ain’t no fancy scholar or nothin’, but I can tell you what I see and what I heard.
Them Constantinople folks, they were big on paintin’ pictures, mostly ’bout Jesus and them saints. They used lots of gold and bright colors, made everything look real shiny and important. Don’t ask me why, that’s just how they liked it. Everything was kinda flat lookin’, not like them fancy 3D movies the young’uns watch now.
I saw a picture once, it was called “The Fall of Constantinople,” looked like a real mess. Lots of fightin’ and people gettin’ hurt. Made me think of that time old man Johnson’s barn caught fire, everyone runnin’ around like chickens with their heads cut off. The fella who painted it, somethin’ Zografos, he sure made it look scary. Temper on wood, they said, whatever that means. Small picture, though, not like them big ones they hang in museums.

They had all them fancy statues from way back when, Romans or somethin’, and they kept lookin’ at ’em for ideas. But mostly, they just painted what the church told ’em to. Gotta keep the priest happy, you know how it is.
Hagia Sophia, now that’s a place. Heard it’s a big ol’ church, all fancy and decorated. I bet they had some real purdy pictures in there. Probably big ones too, coverin’ the whole dang wall. Wish I coulda seen it myself, but I ain’t never been to no Constantinople. Too far for this old lady.
Them paintings, they lasted a long time, hundreds and hundreds of years. Shows you they knew what they was doin’, even if their pictures look a little funny to us now. They weren’t tryin’ to be fancy artists like them fellas in Paris, they were just tryin’ to tell a story, a story about God and them saints.
And that gold, boy howdy, they loved that gold. Made everything look rich and important. Guess they wanted to show God they were spendin’ the good stuff on him. Kinda like when you put out the good china when the preacher comes for dinner, you know?
So, them Constantinople paintings, they ain’t just pretty pictures, they’re stories from a long time ago. Stories about faith and fightin’ and all sorts of things. And even though they look a little strange to us now, they still got somethin’ to say.
I reckon that’s about all I know ’bout them Constantinople paintings. Like I said, I ain’t no expert, but I know what I like. And I like them old pictures, even if they ain’t perfect.
