Classic Noir Film Quotes: Memorable Lines from Cinemas Dark Side
Listen up, y’all. I’m gonna tell ya somethin’ about these “noir film” things. Heard folks chatterin’ about ’em, seen some on that there TV thingy. Black and white, mostly. Folks always lookin’ worried, like they got a bellyache or somethin’.
Them Noir Folks and Their Sayin’s
Now, these noir films, they got some right funny talk in ’em. Like this fella, always whinin’ and askin’ for bourbon. Says somethin’ like, “Why don’t you quit cryin’ and get me some bourbon?” See? Always complainin’. And then he goes on about crime bein’ just a “left-handed” way of doin’ things. Left-handed? What’s wrong with bein’ left-handed, I ask ya? My grandpappy was left-handed, best darn farmer in the county.
Then there’s this other fella, talkin’ all tough. Says somebody ain’t got enough blood to keep a chicken alive. Harsh, real harsh. But I guess that’s how they talk in them noir things. Always dramatic, like a hen cluckin’ after a fox got in the henhouse.
What’s This “Noir” Business Anyway?
Heard some fancy folks on the TV callin’ it “black film” or “dark film.” French talk, I reckon. Sounds about right, though. Everything’s all dark and gloomy. Fog, rain, streets that go nowhere. Just like that time I got lost in the woods lookin’ for my prize-winning rooster. Thought I’d never find my way back.
- Foggy and Rainy: Always rainin’ or foggy. Can’t a body ever see the sun in these films? Reminds me of that one spring, rained for a whole month. Crops almost didn’t make it.
- Gloomy Streets: Them streets, they ain’t right. Twistin’ and turnin’, leadin’ to nothin’ good. Like that old dirt road behind my house, always gettin’ muddy and stuck.
Why Folks Like This Noir Stuff
Don’t rightly know why folks like watchin’ this gloomy stuff. But I heard some say it’s ’cause the stories are good. Suspenseful, they call it. Keeps ya guessin’, like tryin’ to figure out who stole the pies from the county fair bake-off. (It was old Mrs. Higgins, by the way. Saw her sneak off with ’em.)
And they say it’s about folks doin’ wrong, even when they know it’s wrong. Like cheatin’ at cards or stealin’ your neighbor’s chickens. Not that I’d ever do such a thing, mind you. But I guess it makes for a good story, seein’ folks get themselves into trouble.
Some More Sayin’s from Them Noir Folks
Heard another good one the other day. Someone askin’, “Why does everything you say sound like a threat?” Now, that’s somethin’ my husband used to say to me, ‘cept he’d say it after I told him to fix the leaky roof for the tenth time.
And then there’s this one fella sayin’ that a noir story is about folks knowin’ what they’re doin’ is wrong, but they do it anyway. Sounds like that time my nephew Billy Ray knew he shouldn’t have eaten all them cookies before dinner, but he did it anyway. Got a bellyache somethin’ fierce, he did.
Well, That’s About It
So, there you have it. That’s what I know about these noir films. Gloomy folks sayin’ gloomy things in gloomy places. Not my cup of tea, if you ask me. Give me a good Western any day. At least you know who the bad guys are, and they usually get what’s comin’ to ’em. But hey, different strokes for different folks, I always say.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go feed the chickens. Them hens get mighty grumpy if they ain’t fed on time.
