The Eye of Medusa: A Warhammer 40,000 Novel
Well, let me tell ya ’bout this “Eye of Medusa” thing. I ain’t no scholar or nothin’, but I heard some folks talkin’ and I kinda pieced it together.
Sounds like it’s somethin’ from a book or a story, see? Warhammer 40,000, they called it. Don’t know what that is, maybe one of them comic books my grandson reads. Anyway, there’s this place, Thennos, and it’s under the protection of somethin’ or someone called Medusa.
Now, Medusa, that name rings a bell. My old man used to tell me stories ’bout a lady with snakes for hair, turn ya to stone if ya looked at her. Scary stuff, let me tell ya. But this Medusa, I reckon it ain’t the same one, or maybe it is, but in a different way, ya know?
- It seems this Thennos place, the folks there, they turned bad. Traitors, they called ’em. Don’t know what they did, but it must’ve been somethin’ awful.
- And then, these Iron Hands fellas came down on ’em like a ton of bricks. Iron Hands, sounds like tough guys to me. They’re probably like those fellas from the army, all decked out in metal and whatnot.
These Iron Hand fellas, they ain’t all human, ya see? They got more metal in ‘em than flesh and blood. Like them robots they show on TV, only meaner lookin’. They call ‘em “cybernetic.” Sounds fancy, but it just means they’re part machine, I reckon.
Now, this Medusa, it ain’t just one person, it seems to be a whole system, like a bunch of planets or somethin’. And on one of them planets, it’s run by these techie folks, the Cult Mechanicus. They got armies of robots and servants, all kinds of contraptions. Must be a sight to see, all them machines marchin’ around. I tell ya, it’s strange stuff!
I heard someone say this story, the “Eye of Medusa,” it’s real grim and dark. Oppressive, they said. That just means it’s sad and heavy, ya know? Like when the crops fail and you don’t know how you’re gonna feed the family. It makes your heart feel like a stone in your chest.
There’s some other talk about Medusa representin’ somethin’ bigger, somethin’ about how nothin’ matters, how the world’s just cold and empty. Like starin’ into the nothin’ness and seein’ there ain’t nothin’ there. That’s what they say lookin’ into Medusa’s eyes is like. Folks try not to think about it, try to keep lookin’ on the bright side, but sometimes, it’s hard, ya know?
Then there’s this star, Algol, they say it’s got somethin’ to do with Medusa too. It flickers and changes, see, and them old-timers, they thought it was evil, like Medusa herself. Stars are weird things, always changin’, always lookin’ down on us. Makes you wonder what they see, don’t it?
So, that’s what I know ’bout this “Eye of Medusa.” It’s a story about war, and machines, and maybe about how sometimes, the world just ain’t a fair place. It’s a story about lookin’ into the darkness and tryin’ not to get swallowed up by it. And it’s a story about strong folks, tough folks, the kind that fight even when there ain’t no hope left. Just like us old folks when we face a tough harvest, ya know.
