Well, let me tell you about them queens in the Old Testament. Don’t expect no fancy words from me, I’m just gonna tell it like it is, the way I heard it and understand it.
First off, there weren’t a whole lot of ‘em, not like them kings they had everywhere. See, back then, it was mostly men running the show. But there were a few women who, well, they made their mark, you know?
Athaliah, the Mean Queen
Now, there was this one queen, Athaliah her name was. She was a real piece of work, let me tell ya. They talk about her in the Second Book of Kings and Chronicles. She wasn’t supposed to be queen, really. She was the mother of Ahaziah, the king of Judah. But when he died, she went and killed off all her grandkids, all except for one little fella named Joash. Imagine that! Killing your own grandkids just to grab some power. That’s cold, real cold.
- She ruled for six whole years, doing whatever she pleased.
- But she wasn’t no good queen. She worshipped them Baal idols and made the whole place a mess.
- Folks didn’t like her none, and eventually, they got rid of her and put little Joash on the throne, like it shoulda been in the first place.
They even wrote a big fancy song about her, some fella named Handel did. Guess she was famous, even if she was bad news.
Esther, the Brave Queen
Then there’s Esther. Her story is something else. She was a Jewish girl living in a foreign land, Persia I think it was called. She wasn’t born no queen, no sir. She got picked by the king, Ahasuerus, to be his wife. Now, this king, he didn’t know she was Jewish.
See, there was this mean fella named Haman, he was the king’s right-hand man, and he hated the Jews. He wanted to kill ‘em all, every last one. Can you believe that? Hating a whole bunch of people just because they’re different.
But Esther, she was brave. She risked her own life and went to the king, even though she wasn’t supposed to. She told him everything, how Haman was a bad guy and how he wanted to kill her people. The king, he listened, and he got real mad at Haman. In the end, Haman got what he deserved, and Esther saved her people. That’s what I call a real queen, someone who stands up for what’s right, no matter what.
Other “Queens” in the Bible
Now, some folks say there were other queens too, but it depends on how you look at it. In the Song of Songs, they talk about the king’s wives being called queens, but that’s just a fancy title, you know? It ain’t the same as ruling the whole place like Athaliah or being brave like Esther.
And then there’s the Queen of the South. They mention her in the New Testament too, but she came from way down south somewhere, Arabia I think. She visited King Solomon because she heard he was so wise. She wasn’t no queen of Israel, though, just a queen from another place.
So, there you have it. The queens in the Old Testament. Not many of ‘em, like I said, but the ones they got, well, they sure made a difference, one way or another. Athaliah was bad, Esther was good, and the others, well, they were just kinda there. That’s the way it goes sometimes, I guess. Life’s like that, ain’t it?
