Greek Helmets: Explore Ancient Styles and History
Alright, let’s talk about them Greek helmets, you know, the shiny things them fellas wore on their heads way back when. I ain’t no scholar or nothin’, but I seen some pictures and heard some stories, so I’ll tell ya what I know.
First off, they got all sorts of these helmets, more than you can shake a stick at. They call some of ’em Attic helmets. Don’t ask me why, maybe they found a bunch in the attic, who knows? These ones, they looked kinda fancy, like they covered most of the head but still let ya see and breathe good.
Then there’s the Corinthian helmets. Now them, them was the real deal, I tell ya. Made outta bronze, they was, and they covered the whole dang head and neck, only leavin’ little slits for the eyes and mouth. Looked like somethin’ outta a space movie, if ya ask me. They say these helmets come from a place called Corinth, some big city back then, I reckon.
And it don’t stop there, no sirree. They got somethin’ called Kegelhelm, sounds German to me, but what do I know? Then there’s Boeotian helmets, Illyrian type helmets, and Chalcidian helmets. Sounds like a bunch of mumbo jumbo, but I guess each one was a little different. Some had big cheek guards, some had fancy crests on top, and some looked like they could stop a bull in its tracks.
- Kegelhelm: I heard it looks kinda like a cone, you know, like them traffic cones they put on the road, only made outta metal.
- Boeotian helmets: They say these ones got a wide brim, kinda like a hat, keepin’ the sun outta your eyes, I guess.
- Illyrian type helmets: These ones, they got big cheek guards, protectin’ your face from gettin’ whacked.
- Chalcidian helmets: I seen pictures, they look pretty sleek, with a nice curve to ’em.
They even got helmets called Konos and Phrygian type helmets. Konos, that sounds like somethin’ you eat, but it’s a helmet, I tell ya. And the Phrygian ones, they got this pointy top, like a party hat, only made outta metal, not paper. And get this, they even had Boar’s tusk helmets. Yeah, you heard right, tusks from a boar, stuck all over a helmet. Crazy, ain’t it?
Now, where did I hear all this? Well, I seen some things on that internet thingy, the one the kids are always on. They got all sorts of pictures and whatnot. And I heard tell there’s this place called the National Museum of Korea, and they got one of these ancient Greek helmets there. Can ya believe it? A Greek helmet all the way over in Korea. Seems some fella won it in a marathon way back when, some kinda runnin’ race they had in a place called Berlin.
And speaking of hats, they had these things called petasos too. Not really helmets, more like hats, big wide-brimmed things to keep the sun off. Men wore ’em, I heard. Guess even back then, folks didn’t wanna get sunburned.
So, there ya have it, a whole bunch of Ancient Greek helmet types. From the 8th and 7th centuries, they say. That’s a long, long time ago. Soldiers wore ’em, protectin’ their heads in battle. Can’t imagine fightin’ with one of them things on your head, heavy as they musta been. But I guess it was better than gettin’ your head cracked open.
They got all sorts of pictures, if ya wanna see ’em. Just search for “Ancient Greek helmets” on that internet thingy, and you’ll see what I’m talkin’ about. They got helmets for everythin’, seems like. Fancy ones, plain ones, scary lookin’ ones, and even some that look like they wouldn’t protect ya from a fly swatter.
Anyways, that’s about all I know about these Greek helmets. Like I said, I ain’t no expert, but I know a thing or two. And if ya ask me, them old-timey folks were pretty clever, makin’ all these fancy helmets to keep their heads safe. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make some supper. All this talk about helmets made me hungry.
