Exploring the World of Anti Religious Art and Its Impact

Well, let me tell you somethin’ ’bout this… this anti-religious art stuff. I ain’t no fancy scholar or nothin’, but I seen things and heard things, ya know? Folks always makin’ pictures and such, ain’t they? Some folks, they make pictures of Jesus and them angels, all pretty and holy lookin’. But then there’s others… they make different stuff, stuff that makes some folks real mad.

I heard tell that a long time ago, back when them old churches had all the power, everything was about God and Jesus. If you painted somethin’, it better be about them or you’d get in big trouble. Real big trouble. They called it “blasphemy” or somethin’ like that. Sounded scary. It was like you was disrespectin’ their God or somethin’. They didn’t like that one bit.

Now, they say after them old times, things started changin’. Some folks started makin’ pictures of just… regular stuff. Ya know, trees, people, food… stuff that ain’t got nothin’ to do with church. They called it “secular art”. I guess it was like sayin’, “Hey, we ain’t gotta just paint about God all the time, we can paint whatever we want!” That’s what I heard, anyway.

  • Some folks, they paint pictures that go against the church, on purpose! They might make fun of them preachers, or them saints.
  • Or maybe they just paint things that make you think, make you question stuff. That ain’t always popular, let me tell ya.
  • And then there’s them that don’t paint nothin’ religious at all. Just… stuff. Like I said, trees and such. Or maybe just colors and shapes, all mixed up. Don’t make much sense to me, but some folks like it.

There’s this word, “aniconism”… big word, I know. But it just means not makin’ no pictures of God or spirits or nothin’ like that. Some folks believe you just can’t make a picture of God, it ain’t right. So they don’t. And that’s that. They ain’t necessarily against God or nothin’, they just think it ain’t right to make a picture.

It’s all a bit confusing if you ask me. You got folks makin’ pictures of Jesus all the time, then you got folks sayin’ you shouldn’t. And then you got folks makin’ pictures that make fun of the whole thing! It’s a real mess, I tell ya. But I guess that’s what makes the world go ’round, right? Everybody got their own ideas, their own ways of doin’ things.

I remember hearin’ ’bout this fella, Moses, way back in them old bible stories. He was a real fire-and-brimstone kinda guy. Heard tell he smashed up some idols and made folks eat ’em. Now, that’s takin’ it a bit far, if you ask me. But I guess he was real serious ’bout his God. Then there’s another fella, Abraham, who kept them idols around, even though folks blamed ’em for things. See? Even back then, folks couldn’t agree on nothin’!

And then there’s this other thing, “heresy”… another big word. It just means believin’ somethin’ different from what the church tells ya. And if you paint somethin’ that shows that heresy, well, look out! Them church folks, they ain’t gonna like that one bit. They’ll say you’re blasphemin’ again.

So, you got all these different kinds of art. You got your religious art, your secular art, your art that goes against the church, and your art that don’t have nothin’ to do with religion at all. It’s a whole hodgepodge, I tell ya. And folks are always fightin’ over it, always arguin’ about what’s right and what’s wrong.

Me? I just like lookin’ at pretty pictures. Don’t much care if they’re about Jesus or a bowl of fruit. But I can see why folks get all riled up about it. It’s like… it’s like they’re fightin’ over what’s true and what ain’t. And that’s a fight that’s been goin’ on forever, I reckon. And it ain’t gonna stop no time soon, not as long as folks got different ideas in their heads and paintbrushes in their hands.
