Puerto Rican Petroglyphs: Amazing Rock Carvings of the Taíno People

Alright, let’s talk about them Puerto Rican petro-what-evers… petroglyphs, yeah, that’s it. You know, the old drawings on rocks? Real old stuff, way older than me, that’s for sure. My grandkids were showin’ me pictures on their phone thingies, and I gotta say, it’s kinda interestin’.

So, these drawings, they ain’t just scribbles, ya know? They were made by some folks a long, long time ago, called the… Taino, I think? Yeah, the Taino people. They were the ones livin’ on that island before, well, before everyone else showed up. They liked to draw on rocks near rivers and in caves. Makes sense, I guess. Rivers and caves, good places to get outta the sun.

Now, they got this one place, Icacos somethin’ or other, Icacos Petroglyph Group, they call it. Sounds fancy, huh? It’s got a bunch of big rocks with all sorts of drawings on ‘em. Near some rivers, the Icacos and Cubuy rivers, to be exact. Smart folks, pickin’ a spot near water. You always need water.

And these drawings, they ain’t just from any old time. Smart folks who study this stuff, they say these drawings are from… let me see if I remember… around 350 to 1584 AD. That’s a long time ago! Imagine, someone drawin’ on a rock almost two thousand years ago, and we’re still lookin’ at it today. Makes you think, don’t it?

  • They say these Taino folks were real good at makin’ these drawings.
  • Best in the whole area, they were. Real artists, I guess.
  • They didn’t have no fancy paper or pens, just rocks and whatever they used to carve with. Probably some other rocks, if you ask me.

And it ain’t just one type of drawin’ neither. They got petro-glyphs, the carved ones, and pyro-glyphs, made with burnt stuff, and picto-graphs, I think they said. Sounds like a lot of work to me. I can barely draw a stick figure!

These drawings, they tell us stories, see? Stories about how these folks lived, what they believed, what was important to them. It’s like lookin’ into their lives, even though they’re long gone. Kinda like lookin’ at old family photos, but way, way older.

I saw this one picture, of a face carved into a rock. Real simple, but you could tell it was a face. And there were other pictures, swirls and lines and animals, maybe? It’s hard to say for sure, but it’s all pretty amazin’. Makes you wonder what they were thinkin’ when they made ‘em.

And you know, they found these drawings all over Puerto Rico. In caves, near rivers, everywhere those Taino folks went, it seems. They really liked to leave their mark. Guess they wanted us to remember them, even after all this time. And we do, don’t we? We’re talkin’ about them right now.

So, next time you see a picture of them Puerto Rican petroglyphs, take a minute and think about the people who made them. Think about their lives, their stories, their art. It’s a piece of history, right there in front of you. And it’s kinda special, when you think about it.

Anyway, that’s all I gotta say about them petro-whats-its. Just some old drawings on rocks, but they tell a story, a real old story. And that’s somethin’ worth rememberin’, I reckon.
