Who Are the Most Famous Popes? A Simple Guide

Alright, let’s talk about them famous popes. I ain’t no scholar or nothin’, but I heard some things and seen some stuff on the TV, so I’ll tell ya what I know. It’s like this, them popes, they’re the big shots over at the Catholic Church. Been around for ages, they have.
First off, there’s this list, the Annuario Pontificio, somethin’ like that. It’s got all the popes’ names, cept for the ones they call “antipopes.” Don’t rightly know what that means, sounds kinda shady to me. Anyways, this list, it don’t use numbers no more, just the names. Guess they ran outta numbers or somethin’, ha!
I heard some fellers talkin’, professors they were, O’Malley and McBrien, somethin’ like that. They know a whole heap ’bout these popes, wrote books and all. Said there’s been a bunch of ’em, some good, some bad, just like folks everywhere.
- Now, one pope, Innocent the Third, he was a real big deal. Way back when, he was like the king of kings, the most powerful fella in Europe. Folks listened to him, ya know? He even had this fancy idea ’bout the sun and the moon, said the pope’s like the sun and the kings are like the moon, gettin’ their light from him. Sounds kinda uppity to me, but that’s what they said.
- Then there’s Pope John Paul II. He just passed away not too long ago, in 2005. Folks really liked him, called him “John Paul the Great.” Now, that “Great” title, that’s somethin’ special. Only three popes ever got that: Leo the First, way back in the olden days, and Nicholas the First, and then John Paul. Musta done somethin’ right, I reckon.
It ain’t easy being a pope, I tell ya. Gotta make big decisions, talk to all them important people, and keep the church goin’. And there’s all that history, all them other popes before ya, lookin’ over your shoulder, so to speak.
I remember seein’ Pope John Paul II on TV. He seemed like a nice old fella, always smilin’ and wavin’. Traveled all over the world, he did. Met presidents and queens and all sorts. He was a real people person, I guess you could say. Folks loved him, even if they weren’t Catholic.
Now, I don’t know much about the other popes, but I reckon they all had their own stories. Some were probably saints, some were probably sinners, just like the rest of us. But they all had that big job, leadin’ the church and tryin’ to do what’s right, at least in their own eyes.
It’s a long line, this pope thing. Goes way back, hundreds and hundreds of years. Imagine all the things they’ve seen, all the changes in the world. From horses and buggies to them fancy cars and airplanes, from writin’ letters to talkin’ on the telephone and the internet. It’s mind-boggling, it is.
So, that’s my two cents on them famous popes. Like I said, I ain’t no expert, but I know what I hear and what I see. They’re a part of history, these fellas, and they’ve had a big impact on the world, whether you like it or not.
And that Annuario Pontificio book they got over in Rome, well, that’s where you’d find all their names. Just don’t go lookin’ for numbers, ’cause they ain’t there no more. And if you really wanna learn somethin’, go find them books them professors wrote. They’ll tell ya more than I ever could.
But one thing’s for sure, bein’ a pope is a big responsibility. You gotta be strong, gotta be wise, and gotta have a whole lotta faith. And maybe, just maybe, if you’re lucky, folks will call you “the Great” someday.
