Alright, let’s talk about this… this “sumerian plow” thing. I heard some folks talking about it, so I figured I’d share what I know, the way I know how to say it.
What is this Sumerian plow thing, anyway?
Well, from what I gather, it was a big deal way back when. Way, way back. These Sumerian folks, they weren’t like us with our fancy tractors and such. They had to figure things out the hard way. And this plow, well, it was their way of getting the ground ready for planting. No fancy machines, just… a stick, kinda, pulled by animals. Can you imagine?
I heard someone say they started using these things… oh, I don’t know… maybe thousands of years ago. Like, before Jesus was even born! They say it was between 3100 and 1500 B.C. That’s a long, long time ago. Before cars, before TVs, heck, before most everything we got now.
How did they make it?
Now, don’t expect nothin’ fancy. I heard it was just a crooked tree branch, that’s it! They’d tie it up to some oxen – those big cow-like things – and make ‘em pull it through the fields. Can you believe it? Just a stick! But it worked, I guess. It dug up the dirt and got it ready for the seeds.
Why was it so important?
Well, think about it. If you gotta plant seeds, you gotta get the ground ready, right? You can’t just throw seeds on hard, dry dirt and expect somethin’ to grow. You gotta loosen it up, make it soft. And that’s what this plow did. It let them plant more seeds, grow more food, and feed more people.
- It helped them dig the ground deeper
- It made it easier to plant seeds
- It helped control those pesky weeds
- It even helped keep the ground moist, which is important, you know, for things to grow.
Sounds like a lot of work to me, dragging that thing around all day. But I reckon they didn’t have much choice. Gotta eat, right?
The Sumerians weren’t dummies, you know.
They weren’t just sittin’ around twiddlin’ their thumbs. I heard they also figured out how to write, and they made pottery and even chariots! Can you believe it? All that way back then! They even figured out how to move water around with ditches and stuff – “hydraulic engineering” they call it. Fancy words for diggin’ ditches if you ask me. And I also heard they invented some kind of writing system. Smart folks, I tell ya.
So, what’s the big deal about this plow?
Well, it’s like this. It was the start of somethin’ big. It was one of the first real tools for farmin’. And without farmin’, well, we wouldn’t have nothin’ to eat, would we? It’s the same idea as those big tractors you see today. They both do the same thing – get the ground ready for plantin’. That little stick was like the great-great-granddaddy of all those big machines.
Someone told me the Chinese folks had their own plows too, made of iron even. But that was later on. The Sumerians, they were the first, or at least one of the very first.
Now, I ain’t no scholar or nothin’. I just heard some things and I’m sharin’ ‘em with ya. But from what I can tell, this Sumerian plow was a pretty important invention. It helped folks survive and it changed the world. And that’s somethin’ to think about, ain’t it?
So next time you see a farmer out there on his tractor, just remember that it all started with a crooked stick and some oxen, a long, long time ago.
And that’s all I gotta say about that.
