Easy Peasy History: Understanding the Scramble for Africa Cartoon

Alright, let’s talk about this “scramble for Africa” thing, you know, like that cartoon shows. I ain’t no fancy scholar or nothin’, but I can tell ya what I see.

What’s this “Scramble” All About?

Easy Peasy History: Understanding the Scramble for Africa Cartoon

So, back in the days, like, way back when, them European fellas, they got real greedy. They looked over at Africa, all big and full of stuff, and they thought, “Hey, we want that!” It was like a bunch of kids fighting over a single piece of candy, only this candy was a whole dang continent.

See, these European countries, they were all powerful and had big armies and whatnot. And Africa, well, it wasn’t like one big country, ya know? It was full of different tribes and kingdoms, some strong, some not so much. So, these Europeans, they just started snatchin’ up land left and right.

  • First, one country would grab a piece, then another would come along and grab another.
  • They didn’t care about the people who already lived there, not one bit. Just barged in, drew some lines on a map, and said, “This is mine now!” Can you believe that? Just like that!

That Crazy Cartoon

Now, about that cartoon… I seen one of them pictures. It shows them European leaders, all fat and greedy-lookin’, divvyin’ up Africa like it’s a dang pie. They got knives and forks, and they’re just cuttin’ and grabbin’ whatever they want.

It’s pretty plain to see, even for an old gal like me. The cartoon is showin’ how these fellas were just piggish and didn’t give a hoot about nobody but themselves. They were all fightin’ and pushin’ and shovin’ to get the biggest piece. Just a bunch of bullies, if you ask me.

What Happened to Africa?

Well, you can guess what happened. Them Europeans, they took over everything. They bossed folks around, stole their land, took their resources… gold, diamonds, whatever they could get their hands on. It was a real mess, let me tell ya.

And why’d they do it? Well, they wanted the riches, sure. But they also wanted the power. They wanted to be the biggest and the best, and havin’ a bunch of colonies in Africa made ’em feel important, I guess. Made ’em feel like big shots.

It ain’t right, you know? Stealin’ land and bossin’ people around. It ain’t right no matter how you slice it. But that’s what they did, them Europeans. And that cartoon, it just shows you how ugly it all was.

The Mad Scramble, huh? That’s a good name for it. ‘Cause it was mad, alright. Just a bunch of greedy fellas scramblin’ for somethin’ that wasn’t theirs to begin with. Makes me mad just thinkin’ about it.

Easy Peasy History: Understanding the Scramble for Africa Cartoon

Some folks say this happened a long time ago, and we should just forget about it. But I say, no sir! We gotta remember this stuff. We gotta remember how people can be greedy and how they can treat each other bad. And we gotta make sure it don’t happen again.

Anyways, that’s my take on it. Just an old woman’s thoughts on this “scramble for Africa” and that crazy cartoon. It ain’t pretty, but it’s the truth, as far as I can see.

But you know what? The world keeps changin’ and those people in Africa, they got their countries now and they are doin’ their own thing. It ain’t easy for them, but they are strong and they will keep fighting for a better life. That’s what matters, don’t it?
