The Hunting Thing
Someone told me that shaman stuff started with hunters. Makes sense, I guess. Huntin’ ain’t easy. You gotta be sneaky, gotta be strong, and gotta be lucky. And if you ain’t got no control over the animals or the weather, you gotta find somethin’ to help you. So maybe they started talkin’ to spirits, askin’ for help, and then they drew pictures about it. Makes a fella feel better, I suppose, havin’ some magic on your side when you’re starin’ down a big ol’ bear.
Those Korean Mansin Folks
Then there’s these Korean fellas, the, uh, man-sin? Yeah, that’s it. They hang up bright pictures of their gods, like we hang up pictures of Jesus and Mary. They pray to them pictures, ask for help, and I guess the gods talk back through the pictures. Kinda like havin’ a phone line to heaven, but with paint instead of wires. They use them pictures to figure out the future, get rid of bad spirits, and heal the sick. Sounds like they’re doin’ the same kinda stuff them old-timey shamans did, just with a different name and different pictures.
It’s All Kinda Connected, See?
So, you got the old-timey shamans drawin’ their spirits and animals, and you got the Korean mansin hangin’ up their god pictures. And it’s all kinda the same thing, ain’t it? People tryin’ to make sense of the world, tryin’ to get a little help from somethin’ bigger than themselves. And they use art to do it. To show it, to feel it, to share it. It ain’t fancy, but it’s real. And that’s more than you can say for some of that modern art, I tell ya.
