Alright, let’s talk about them old Roman houses, the kinda places them fancy folks lived in way back when. I ain’t no scholar or nothin’, but I heard some things and seen some pictures, so I’ll tell ya what I know.
Ancient Roman House Plans – What Them Rich Folks Had
So, you wanna know about how them Roman houses were set up? Well, it wasn’t like our houses, that’s for sure. They had these big places, especially if they was rich. They called ’em domus in the city, and villa out in the country. Sounds fancy, huh? A villa, that was for the real loaded ones, like a big ol’ farm with all the fixin’s.
The main part of a domus, the city house, it was all built around a big room called the atrium. Imagine walkin’ in the front door and bam! There’s this big open space, with a hole in the roof to let the light in and the smoke out. Kinda like a fancy barn, but prettier, I reckon.
Around this atrium, that’s where all the other rooms was. They had bedrooms, they called ’em cubicula, places to sleep and such. And dinin’ rooms, triclinia they called ’em, where they’d lay around on couches and eat ’til they couldn’t eat no more. And places for the servants to sleep, can’t forget about them. They gotta sleep somewhere, right?
Then there was this other important room, the tablinum. That was like the boss’s office, where the man of the house would do his business and keep all his important papers. And don’t forget the vestibulum, that was just the little hallway right inside the front door. Kinda like a mudroom, I guess, but fancier.
Now, them villa houses out in the country, them was somethin’ else. Big ol’ estates, with lots of land and buildin’s. They had all the same rooms as the city houses, but more of ’em, and bigger. And they had gardens and courtyards and all sorts of fancy stuff. I seen pictures, it was somethin’ else. Makes my little place look like a chicken coop.

Building Them Houses – Mud and Rocks and Fancy Stuff
Way back when, in the early days, them Romans, they built their houses outta mud and straw. Can you imagine? Just like my grandpappy’s first shed, only bigger I guess. Then they started usin’ rocks and bricks, and they even covered the outside with this white stuff called stucco. Made it look all pretty and shiny, I reckon. They even used marble sometimes, for the real fancy places. Them rich folks, always gotta show off, ain’t they?
But not everyone lived in them fancy houses. The poor folks out in the country, they lived in little wooden shacks with roofs made outta straw. And in the cities, the poor folks lived in these big ol’ apartment buildings called insulae. Packed in like sardines, I bet. Just like them city folks today, always crammin’ themselves in together.
Looking Back at Them Roman Houses
So, that’s the gist of it, as far as I can tell. Them Roman houses, they were somethin’ else. From mud huts to marble mansions, they had all kinds. And it all depended on how much money you had. The rich folks lived in big fancy places, and the poor folks, well, they just got by the best they could. Ain’t much changed, has it?
It’s interesting to think about how they lived way back then. No electric lights, no runnin’ water, no indoor toilets. But they made do, didn’t they? And some of them houses, they were pretty darn impressive, even by today’s standards. Makes you wonder if them old timers knew a thing or two we forgot.

Floor Plans and Villas
They got these things called floor plans, kinda like maps of the houses. I seen some for them fancy villas, like the Villa del Casale, that place was somethin’ else. Big ol’ place with lots of rooms and courtyards. Them floor plans show you where everything was, all the rooms and hallways and such. It’s kinda like lookin’ at a dollhouse, but for real big houses. I tell ya, them Romans knew how to live large, at least the rich ones did.
