Deity Statues: From Ancient Greece to Modern Day Spiritual Practices

Alright, let’s talk about these… what do you call ’em… deity statues. Yeah, that’s it. You know, those things folks make, like, uh… pictures, but not flat, but standin’ up. Made of rock, or wood, or sometimes that shiny stuff… metal, I think they call it.

What are these deity statues anyway? Well, some folks, they make ’em to, you know, pray to. Like, they think it’s their… how do you say it… their god or somethin’. They put ’em up high, or in a special place, and they talk to ’em, give ’em stuff. I don’t know, seems kinda strange to me, talkin’ to a rock, but hey, to each their own, right? I seen some folks doin’ that down the road. They had this funny lookin’ thing made of wood, all painted up, and they’d put flowers and food in front of it. Said it brought them good luck or somethin’.

Now, these statues, they ain’t all the same, mind you. Some are big, some are small. Some look like people, some look like animals, and some, well, I ain’t even sure what they’re supposed to be. I saw one once in a book my grandson had. Looked like a lady, but she didn’t have no arms! Imagine that! They said she was some kinda goddess, real old one too. Folks these days, they make all kinds of things. I remember my husband, old Jim, he used to carve little birds outta wood. Not for prayin’ or nothin’, just for fun, but them was pretty cute tho’.

Why do people make ‘em? Well, like I said, some folks pray to ’em. They think it’ll make their crops grow better, or keep ’em safe, or bring ’em money. Other folks, they just like lookin’ at ’em. They think they’re pretty, or somethin’. I guess it’s like lookin’ at a flower. Some folks like roses, some folks like them big sunflowers, and some folks like them what ya call…lilacs. All different, but still pretty to someone.

Where do you find these statues? Well, they’re everywhere, I tell you! You can find ’em in churches, in temples, in museums, and even in people’s houses. My neighbor, Mrs. Gable she had this little statue in her garden. Said it was her grandmammy’s. It’s a little angel made out of, I don’t know, some kinda white stone, must be marble they said. Looks like it is going to fly any minute. She keeps it clean and shiny. Said it keeps her company. I guess it’s nice to have somethin’ to look at, somethin’ that makes you feel good, you know?

Are they important? Well, to some folks, they are. They spend a lot of time and money on ’em, makin’ ’em, takin’ care of ’em, prayin’ to ’em. To other folks, they’re just… things. Like a chair, or a table, or a… what do ya call that thing you put soup in… a bowl! Yeah, just things. But, I guess even just ‘things’ can be important to some people. I’ve seen folks get all riled up about a broken dish. It’s all in what it means to you, I guess.

What about old statues? Now them, those are somethin’ else. They been around for hundreds, maybe thousands of years. Folks dig ’em up outta the ground, and they put ’em in museums. People come from all over to look at ’em. I saw one once, on the TV. It was all broken up, but they put it back together. They said it was from some old country, a long, long time ago. Makes you think, don’t it? How long these things can last.

So, that’s about all I know about these deity statues. Some folks pray to ’em, some folks just like ’em, and some folks dig ’em up. They’re made of all kinds of stuff, and they come in all shapes and sizes. And they’re everywhere, if you just know where to look. It’s a big world, with lots of different things. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, you hear about these statues, or somethin’ like that, and you realize there’s always more to learn. Even for an old woman like me.

In my opinion, it don’t matter whether it’s a fancy thing in a museum or just a little somethin’ someone made. It’s all about what it means to you, ya know? And to the folks that make ‘em and use ‘em for prayin’, well, that’s their business. As long as they ain’t hurtin’ nobody, I say let ‘em be. Now what was I doin’ before this? Oh yeah, gotta go feed the chickens!
