Alright, so listen up, I’m gonna tell ya ’bout this sur-real-ism and cube-ism stuff. Don’t you go gettin’ all fancy on me, it ain’t that complicated. It’s just pictures, ya know? But these artists, they weren’t paintin’ no pretty flowers or nothin’ like that. They were messin’ with your head, makin’ things look all… weird.
What is this Cubism stuff anyway?
So, this cube-ism, right? Imagine you’re lookin’ at a cup, but instead of seein’ one cup, you see it from all sides at once. Like, the front, the side, maybe even the bottom, all jumbled up together. These fellas, like that Picasso guy, they’d take somethin’ normal, like a face or a guitar, and break it up into all these squares and triangles. It’s like they chopped it up with a knife and then glued it back together all wrong. But that was the point, I guess. They weren’t tryin’ to make it look real, they were tryin’ to show you a different way of seein’ it. Like, they were sayin’, “Hey, look at this thing from a bunch of different angles, all at the same time!” Crazy, right?

And then comes this Surrealism thing…
Now, this sur-real-ism, that’s a whole ‘nother story. These folks, they were paintin’ dreams, or maybe nightmares. You ever had a dream where nothin’ makes sense? Like, you’re flyin’ but you got no wings, or you’re talkin’ to a dog and it’s talkin’ back? That’s kinda what sur-real-ism is like. They’d paint stuff that just ain’t possible. Melting clocks, faces with eyes in weird places, all sorts of strange things. It’s like they were tryin’ to get inside your head and show you what’s hidin’ in there, all the weird thoughts and feelings you don’t even know you have. Makes ya think, huh?
How did these two things get mixed up?
Well, from what I hear, this cube-ism came first. And it kinda paved the way for sur-real-ism. See, once those cube-ists started breakin’ all the rules, makin’ things all abstract and weird, it gave other artists the courage to do their own thing, to get even weirder. Like, the cube-ists showed ‘em you don’t gotta paint things the way they look in real life. You can mess with reality, you can bend it and twist it any way you want. So, the sur-real-ists took that idea and ran with it. They used some of that cube-ist style, the broken-up shapes and all that, but they added their own twist, makin’ it even more dreamlike and bizarre.
What did all this craziness lead to?
Well, after these guys got done with their paintin’, the art world was never the same. Nowadays, you see all sorts of crazy art, stuff that don’t look like nothin’ you ever seen before. And it all kinda goes back to these cube-ists and sur-real-ists. They opened the door, you know? They showed everyone that art don’t gotta be pretty or realistic. It can be anything you want it to be. It can be a way to express yourself, to show people how you see the world, even if it’s a weird and wacky way. So, next time you’re lookin’ at some modern art and scratchin’ your head, just remember these folks. They were the ones who started it all, the ones who dared to be different and make art that makes you think, even if you don’t quite understand it.
So what’s the big deal?
Honestly? I don’t know. Some folks like it, some folks don’t. Me? I like a good picture of a horse, myself. But these artists, they were tryin’ to do somethin’ different, somethin’ new. And I guess that’s important, right? Even if it don’t make a lick of sense to you and me.

So, yeah, that’s the long and short of it. Cube-ism broke things down, sur-real-ism made ‘em weird, and together they changed the whole art game. You don’t gotta like it, but you gotta admit, it’s kinda somethin’, ain’t it?
