Alright, let’s talk about this Mayan art and Aztec art. You know, it’s like lookin’ at two different kinds of corn, both grow in the ground but look and taste a little different.
Mayan Art, What’s That All About?
Now, them Mayans, they were somethin’ else. They made all sorts of things, you know, outta stone, wood, clay… even that stucco stuff. They’d carve on it, paint on it, stick it on walls. Real fancy-like. They made jewelry too, pretty things outta jade and bone and shells. And the pictures they made, ah, they showed people doin’ things, fightin’ or dancin’ or whatever. They painted on pots and walls, and they even made these big stone things, like big ol’ tombstones, but with fancy carvings on ’em. They called them “stelae”.
- They liked to carve and paint pictures of real people, not just stick figures or somethin’.
- Lots of their art was about their gods and their beliefs. You know, like how we go to church, they had their own way of doin’ things.
- They used lots of colors, specially blues and greens. Made things look real purty.
- They also liked them curly lines and shapes, you know, like vines and stuff. And they drew all sorts of little squares and triangles and whatnots, all mixed together.
Aztec Art, A Different Kettle of Fish
Now them Aztecs, they were a bit different. Their art, it was big and bold, like they wanted everyone to see it from a mile away. They built huge things, big statues and temples, to show how powerful they were. They liked to show off their rulers too, make ’em look all big and important.
They were good at drawing animals, made ‘em look real life-like, but when they drew people, it weren’t so real-lookin’. And their colors, they were bright and loud, like a rooster crowin’ in the mornin’. They used lots of reds and yellows, real eye-catchin’ stuff.
So, What’s the Big Difference?
Well, like I said, it’s like two kinds of corn. The Mayans, they were more into the details, makin’ things real lookin’, and usin’ lots of colors and curvy lines. They were more into real life people and action when creating art works. Thinkin’ about what things really looked like. The Aztecs, they were all about showin’ off, makin’ big statements, and usin’ bold colors. They were good at animals, but not so much at people.
It’s like one’s a gentle rain and the other one’s a thunderstorm. Both powerful in their own way, but one’s quieter and the other’s…well, louder. Mayans liked to draw people more realistic, you know, like they really looked. Aztecs, they were better at drawin’ animals real good. Both of them made amazing things though, can’t deny that.
Why Should We Care Anyways?
Well, it’s like lookin’ at old pictures of your family. It tells you where you come from, what your people were like. These Mayans and Aztecs, they were people too, just like us. And their art, it tells us somethin’ about them, how they lived, what they believed in. It’s important to remember where we all come from, ain’t it?

So, Mayans, real lookin’ folks, curvy lines, lots of colors, special blues and greens and complicated geometric patterns. Aztecs, big and bold, lots of animals, bright colors, specially red and yellow. Both good, just different. Like corn, you know? Different kinds for different folks.
