Well, let me tell ya, this here Song of Roland, it’s a real piece of work, I tell ya. Lots of folks dyin’, just droppin’ like flies. This Roland fella, he sees a whole heap of ’em gone. It’s a mess, a real bloody mess.
The Evenin’ and the Sun
They say the evenin’ was fair, sun shinin’ bright. But let me tell ya, that sun didn’t shine so bright on them poor souls lyin’ there. Them white mules, they ain’t gonna carry no more, that’s for sure. It makes ya think, all this fightin’, what’s it all for? Just a bunch of dead folks, that’s what it is.
Guenes and the Glove
Then there’s this Guenes fella. He says, “You’ll know soon enough.” Know what? Know that everybody’s gonna die? That’s what I know. And then somethin’ about a glove fallin’ in the dust. Dust to dust, that’s what they say, and that’s what it is. Just a whole lotta dust and dead people.
Song of Roland and the Dead Folks
This here song, it’s all about seein’ dead people. Lots and lots of ’em. It ain’t pretty, I tell ya. It’s a brutal thing, this war. Just bodies everywhere. Makes a body sick, all this death and dyin’.
- They fought hard, them fellas.
- But fightin’ don’t bring ’em back, does it?
- Just more dead folks, that’s all it gets ya.
Roland and his Men
This Roland, he’s sad, real sad, about his men dyin’. But he keeps on fightin’. Killin’ more of them Moslem fellas. But what good does it do? They’re still dead, his men. And them Moslems, they got families too, I reckon. Just a whole lotta killin’ and dyin’. It ain’t right, I tell ya, it just ain’t right.
Marsile fightin’ too
And this Marsile fella, he’s fightin’ too. Fightin’ hard, they say. Well, fightin’ hard don’t make no difference when you’re dead, does it? They’re all just gonna end up in the ground, no matter how hard they fight.
Ganelon the Betrayer
Then there’s this Ganelon fella. Seems like he’s the one to blame. Betrayed Roland, they say. Betrayed everybody. That ain’t right. You don’t go betrayin’ folks. But it happens, I guess. People betray each other, and then people die. That’s the way of the world, seems like.
Good and Evil
They say this song is about good and evil. Good always wins, they say. Well, I don’t see much good in all this dyin’. Seems like evil wins just as much, if not more. But what do I know? I’m just an old woman. But I’ve seen a lot in my day, and I’ve seen a lot of death. And it ain’t good, I tell ya, it ain’t good at all.
Lots of Death in Song of Roland
So, this here Song of Roland, it’s full of quotes about death, about seein’ people dead. And it ain’t pretty. It’s a sad, sad story, all about fightin’ and dyin’. And it makes ya think, what’s it all worth? All this killin’, all this dyin’, what’s it all for? Just a bunch of dead folks, that’s all it is in the end. A whole heap of trouble and sadness, that’s what it sounds like to me.
Remembering the Dead
It’s important to remember them fellas what died, even if it’s just in a song. They fought and they lost, and somebody should remember that. Makes you grateful for the simple things in life, you know? Like a warm fire and a roof over your head. Things them fellas ain’t got no more.
The End of the Story
And when it’s all said and done, the song ends, but the dyin’ don’t, does it? People keep on killin’ each other, and people keep on dyin’. It’s a sad thing, a real sad thing. But that’s the way it is, I guess. Just a whole lotta death and dyin’, and not much else.
