Baroque Classicism: What Is It and Why Is It Important?
Well now, let me tell ya ’bout this thing called “baroque classicism.” Don’t you go gettin’ all fancy on me, it ain’t as complicated as them city folks make it out to be.
What is this baroque classicism thing anyway? It’s a kinda way of makin’ art and buildin’ stuff that started a long, long time ago. Way back when, like, in the 1500s and 1600s. They say it even went on ’til the middle of the 1700s. That’s a whole lotta years, ain’t it? Folks back then, they was explorin’ and fightin’ over religion, just like they do now, I reckon.
This “baroque” part, it means things were kinda fancy and showy. Lotsa swirls and curlicues, like them fancy cakes they make in the city bakeries. Everything was big and grand, you know? Churches, paintin’s, even the music! They had these things called operas, where folks sang stories real loud. And plays, too, with lots of dancin’. The rich folks loved it, and so did the regular folks, I guess. Everybody likes a good show, right?
But then there’s this “classicism” part. That means they was lookin’ back to the old days, way back to the Greeks and Romans. Them old timers, they knew how to do things right, or so folks thought. They liked things to be simple and perfect, like a good loaf of bread, not all them swirls and whatnots.
So, baroque classicism is like mixin’ them two things together. You got the fancy baroque stuff, but it’s also kinda straight and proper, like the old classic stuff. It’s like puttin’ on your Sunday best but still wearin’ your comfy old shoes. You get what I’m sayin’?
Think of it like this, they were makin’ buildings, big ones, mind you, like them churches you see in pictures. But instead of just piling up stones any which way, they made ’em look like them old Greek temples, with the columns and all that. But then they added all the fancy baroque decorations, like them statues of angels and whatnot. They really liked gold back then, plastered it everywhere they could, I tell ya. Just like them magpies, always attracted to shiny things.
And the paintings! They was full of people, mostly lookin’ real serious. But they also had lots of action, like folks fightin’ or flyin’ up to heaven. And the colors, oh, they were somethin’ else! Real bright and bold, not like them pale things they got in museums now. They wanted to make you feel somethin’, you know? Make you feel like you were right there in the picture.
- Baroque: Fancy, showy, lotsa swirls and decorations. Big and grand, like a king’s palace.
- Classicism: Simple, proper, lookin’ back to the old Greek and Roman ways. Like a good, sturdy table.
- Baroque Classicism: Mixin’ the fancy with the simple. Like a fancy dress with comfy shoes.
It wasn’t just paintin’s and buildin’s, though. They had music, too. Real loud music, with lots of instruments. And they had these things called sculptures, where they made statues out of stone or metal. Mostly of important people, or angels, or sometimes just regular folks lookin’ all serious-like. Everything was big and dramatic, like they was tryin’ to show off to God or somethin’.
Now, I ain’t no art expert, but that’s how I understand it. It was a time when folks wanted to make things big and beautiful, but they also wanted to show they knew somethin’ about the old days. And they did it all with a lotta flair, I tell ya. A whole lotta flair.
So, next time you see one of them old buildings or paintings, remember what I told ya. It ain’t just some fancy stuff nobody understands. It’s just folks tryin’ to make somethin’ beautiful, and maybe show off a little bit, too. Just like we all do, one way or another.
