Horus the Hawk: The Fascinating Story of an Egyptian God
Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about this Horus fella, the hawk god. Folks back in the day, they sure had some strange ideas, but this Horus, he was a big deal to them Egyptians.
Who was this Horus guy, anyway?
See, they say he was a sun god, and also the god of kings. Imagine that, a bird bein’ a king! He was like their main man, always lookin’ out for the pharaohs, the big bosses of Egypt. They drew him with a hawk head, sometimes just a whole hawk, ’cause hawks, well, they were everywhere back then, just like sparrows are here. Everyone could see ’em, so it made sense, I guess.

Now, this Horus had a mama, Isis, and a papa, Osiris. But somethin’ bad happened. This other god, Set, the desert god, he was a real meanie. He went and killed Osiris! Can you believe it? So, Isis, she told Horus, “Boy, you gotta go get that Set fella. Protect the people and get revenge for your papa!”
- Horus’s mission: Avenge his father.
- Protect the people from the evil Set.
- Become the rightful ruler.
So Horus, he had a lot on his plate. He had to fight Set, not just to get even, but also to become the ruler of Egypt. It was a whole big mess, lots of battles and whatnot. He was always scrappin’ with Set, tryin’ to make things right.
Horus was important, a helper to Ra.
And get this, Horus wasn’t just some local god. He was a helper to Ra, the big sun god, the top dog. That’s how important he was. For a long, long time, Horus was the symbol of the pharaoh’s power. If you saw Horus, you knew the pharaoh was in charge. He was a key player in all them Egyptian stories and beliefs.
Horus and that other fella, Jesus.
Some folks try to compare Horus to Jesus, but I don’t see it myself. Jesus, he died and came back, that’s the whole story. But Horus, he didn’t really have a clear dyin’ and comin’ back story. It was more about him fightin’ Set and protectin’ folks. Different stories, different gods, that’s what I say.
What Horus means, the bird and all.
So, this Horus fella, he was the hawk, the protector, the king’s god. He was a big part of their lives, these Egyptians. They looked up to him, counted on him to keep ’em safe and sound. He’s like a superhero, kinda, in their stories. It’s important to know these stories, makes ya understand them old timers better. They weren’t so different from us, just had different ways of lookin’ at things. And this Horus, well, he was right in the middle of it all.
The hawk god, and what we can learn.
You know, even though it’s an old story about a hawk god, it kinda makes you think. Folks back then, they cared about right and wrong, just like us. They wanted protection, someone to look out for them. And they had their stories, their beliefs, just like we do. Horus, the hawk, he was their guy. He meant somethin’ to them, somethin’ important. It teaches you that people are people, no matter when they lived or what they believed in.
