Tabstone Graffiti Art: Where to Find It and Why It Matters

Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about this here… what do you call it… tabstone graffiti? Yeah, that’s it. Tabstone graffiti. Sounds fancy, don’t it? But it ain’t nothin’ more than folks scribblin’ and drawin’ on rocks, like they always done, only now they got a fancy name for it.

You know, back in my day, we didn’t have no fancy names. If you wrote on a wall, you got a whippin’. But these young folks, they call it art. Art! Hmph. I seen better art on a cow’s behind.

But I guess some of it ain’t so bad. I seen some pictures, real pretty like, with all sorts of colors. Reds and blues and greens, all mixed up together. Reminds me of them fancy paintings they got in the city museum, only… different. You know, the museum ones, they all neat and tidy. These here graffiti things, they wild and messy, like a chicken coop after a fox got in.

  • Some folks say it’s just a bunch of mess,
  • but others say it’s tellin’ a story.
  • Like them pictures they draw on the sides of buildin’s in the city.

I heard tell they call that “street art” too. Same kinda thing, I reckon. Just folks tryin’ to say somethin’, only they ain’t got no paper or canvas, so they use whatever they can find. A wall, a rock, a train car… Don’t matter none to them.

Now, some of this here graffiti, it ain’t pretty at all. Just squiggles and lines, like a chicken scratched it out. Can’t make heads nor tails of it. But then you see somethin’ that makes you stop and stare. A picture of a flower, maybe, or a bird. Or even just some words, written all fancy-like. And you think, “Well, I’ll be. That ain’t so bad.”

I heard tell some of these graffiti artists, they get famous for it. People pay big money for their pictures. Can you believe that? Payin’ money for somethin’ somebody drawed on a wall! It’s a crazy world, I tell ya. But I guess if folks like it, then that’s all that matters.

And this here tabstone graffiti… well, it’s kinda the same thing, only on rocks. Maybe it’s folks practicin’ before they go paintin’ on walls. Or maybe they just like drawin’ on rocks. Who knows? Young folks, they do all sorts of strange things.

I remember seein’ some rocks down by the creek, all covered in pictures. Kids, they musta done it. Flowers and animals and all sorts of things. Even some words, but I couldn’t make ’em out. My eyes ain’t what they used to be, you know. But it looked kinda pretty, all them colors against the gray stone. Made the place look a little less…lonely.

So, this here tabstone graffiti… is it art? Is it vandalism? I don’t know. Maybe it’s both. Maybe it ain’t neither. Maybe it’s just folks doin’ what folks do, makin’ their mark on the world. And maybe, just maybe, that ain’t such a bad thing after all.

You know, folks been makin’ their mark on things since the beginnin’ of time. Cave paintings, they call ’em. Ain’t that just another kind of graffiti? Maybe these young folks ain’t so different from them cavemen after all. Just tryin’ to tell their story, one rock, one wall, one picture at a time.

And you know what? Sometimes, them stories are worth listenin’ to. Even if they’re just scribbled on a rock.
