Was There a Roman Description of Jesus? Historical Evidence

Well now, let’s talk about this fella Jesus, the one them Romans talked about. I ain’t no scholar, mind you, just tellin’ it like I heard it. Folks say there’s stuff written down, old writings and such, about him.

Some Roman fella, Tacitus his name was, he wrote somethin’ ’bout Jesus bein’ put to death by this Pontius Pilate fellow. Said it plain as day, seems like. Now, I don’t know much about writin’, but they say this Tacitus fella, he was important, so maybe what he said was true. It’s somethin’ about Jesus bein’ executed, like a criminal or somethin’. Folks was sayin’ back then it was a big deal, this Jesus fella gettin’ killed.

Was There a Roman Description of Jesus? Historical Evidence

Then there’s this other story, about a letter from some consul, Lentulus his name. He was writin’ to the Emperor Tiberius, big shot fella back then. This letter, it gives a description of Jesus, what he looked like and all. Said he was tall, good-lookin’ fella, serious-like face. Hair the color of new wine, they say. Never seen him laugh, but he cried sometimes. That’s what the letter said, anyhow. Now, I don’t know if it’s true or not, this letter. Found it in some old monastery, they say. Lots of old papers there, who knows what’s real and what ain’t?

  • Tall and well-built: Seems like Jesus wasn’t no small fella.
  • Serious face: Didn’t go around grinnin’ all the time, I guess.
  • Wine-colored hair: Fancy hair, that is.
  • Never laughed, but cried: Musta been a deep-thinkin’ fella, full of sorrow or somethin’.

Some folks say this Lentulus fella, he never even existed. And this letter, maybe it’s just made up. I don’t rightly know. But it’s a story, and stories, well, they stick around.

There’s talk about other stuff too. Pictures, carved into walls, they say. One of ’em, shows a fella worshipin’ someone on a cross. They say it’s Jesus, but it’s hard to tell. Old picture, you know, all scratched up and faded. Could be anybody, really. But folks who know about these things, they say it’s from a long time ago, close to when Jesus was alive.

So, what do we know for sure? Well, Tacitus, that Roman fella, he definitely mentioned Jesus. And that’s somethin’. That’s comin’ from a Roman, not one of Jesus’s followers. So it ain’t just one side of the story, you see. Makes you think, it does. This execution, it musta happened. As for the rest, that letter and the pictures, well, maybe they’re true, maybe they ain’t. But the Romans, they knew about Jesus, that’s for sure. They wrote about him, and that’s important. Makes you wonder, who was this Jesus fella, that even the Romans took notice of him?

Folks still talk about him today, don’t they? Musta been somethin’ special, that’s all I can say. This historical evidence, they call it. Sounds fancy, but it just means folks writin’ stuff down, or drawin’ stuff. And sometimes, that’s all we got to go on.

Was There a Roman Description of Jesus? Historical Evidence

So there you have it, what I heard about them Romans and Jesus. Not much, maybe, but it’s somethin’. Now, I gotta go tend to my chickens.

Some scholars say that the historical evidence of Jesus isn’t very strong, some say its good enough. It’s hard to say for sure, but there’s definitely somethin’ there. The Romans, you know, they kept good records, so if they’re talkin’ about this Jesus fellow, somethin’ must have happened. It’s like if the sheriff writes down about someone, then you know they were probably around, doin’ somethin’ to get the sheriff’s attention.

So we got this Tacitus fellow, the Roman, talkin’ about Jesus bein’ executed. We got this Lentulus letter, maybe true, maybe not, givin’ a description. And we got some old pictures, maybe showin’ Jesus, maybe not. It’s all bits and pieces, you see. Like a puzzle that’s missin’ half the parts. But you can still get an idea of what the picture’s supposed to be, even if it ain’t perfect. And that’s the thing about history. You gotta take what you can get and try to make sense of it. Just like piecin’ together a quilt, bit by bit, till you got somethin’ that keeps you warm at night. That’s what this history stuff is like, it gives you an idea, even if it ain’t the whole thing.
