Alright, alright, let’s talk about this… uh… “objectivism” thing in art. Don’t you go getting all fancy on me now, I’ll tell ya what I know, simple as that.
What’s this “objectivism” all about then?
Well, some folks, they say, if somethin’s beautiful, it’s beautiful for everyone. Like, you know, a pretty flower or a sunset. They reckon there’s rules for beauty, and it don’t matter who you are or where you come from, it’s just pretty, end of story. That’s what they call objective beauty, I guess.
Now, them fellas, they argue a lot about it. They write big books and use big words. They say, “This here art is good ‘cause it follows the rules,” or “That there art is bad ‘cause it don’t.” I say, “Who made them rules anyway?” Seems to me, someone just made ‘em up outta thin air.
- Like, they talk about “form.” Saying a picture gotta have certain shapes or lines to be good.
- And they talk about “values,” I ain’t sure what kinda values they meanin’. Like is it the price or something else? I don’t know.
Sounds like a load of hogwash to me. But hey, they got their learnin’, I got mine.
But then there’s the other side, you see.
Some other folks, they say, “Hold on a minute! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” That means if I think it’s pretty, then it’s pretty, and if you don’t, well, that’s just fine too. They call this, I think, subjective… yeh somethin’ like that.
This makes a whole lot more sense to me, you know? Like, I love them old quilts my grandma used to make. All them colors and patterns, they just warm my heart. But my neighbor, she says they’re “too busy” and “old-fashioned.” Well, that’s her opinion, ain’t it? She likes them fancy modern pictures with all the squiggly lines, and I say they look like a chicken scratched ‘em. To each their own, I say.
And they say it’s been like this for ages. Way back when, even them kings and queens, they had their own ideas about what was beautiful. And in the olden days, it was the same thing. So, who’s right? I reckon nobody’s right and everybody’s right. It just depends on how you look at it.
So, what’s the real deal with art, then?
Well, I think it ain’t just about rules and fancy words. It’s about feelin’s, you see? It’s about how it makes you feel. Does it make you happy? Does it make you sad? Does it make you think? That’s what matters, not some fella in a museum tellin’ you what’s good and what’s bad.
And it’s about where it comes from too. Like, that quilt my grandma made, it tells a story. It tells about her life, her family, her town. That’s what makes it special. And them old songs they sing at the church, they tell stories too. They tell about faith and hope and love. That’s beautiful, even if it ain’t got no fancy shapes or lines.
Can we all agree on somethin’?
Maybe, just maybe, there’s a bit of both in it, you know? Maybe some things are just plain pretty, like a baby’s smile. And maybe some things are pretty to some folks and not to others, like them squiggly line pictures. And maybe, we can use all these rules and stuff to understand the art better and learn more about when it was made. You know, learn about the way people used to live and what was important to them.
And maybe, the most important thing is just to appreciate it all. To appreciate the beauty in the world, in all its different forms. Whether it’s a fancy paintin’ or a handmade quilt, whether it follows the rules or breaks ‘em all, it don’t matter. If it touches your heart, that’s all that counts.
So, there you have it. That’s my take on this “objectivism” thing. You can take it or leave it, it don’t make no difference to me. I just speak my mind, that’s all. And maybe, just maybe, you learned somethin’ today, even if it ain’t nothin’ fancy.
