Alright, so listen up, I’m gonna tell ya ’bout this “Black Art” thing. I saw somethin’ on the TV ’bout it the other day. It was called, somethin’ like, “Black Art: In the Absence of Light”. Yeah, that was it. Fancy name, huh?
This fella, Sam Pollard, he made this movie ’bout it. He’s one of them movie-makin’ fellas, ya know? The movie, it talks about Black art, and it all starts with somethin’ called “Two Centuries”. Sounds like a long time, right? Two hundred years! That’s a lotta birthdays.
Anyways, this “Two Centuries” thing, it’s about Black American art. Art made by Black folks, ya see? Paintin’s, sculptures, all sorts of stuff. And this fella, David Driskell, he was a big deal in all this. He was a smart fella, an artist and a teacher, they say. He passed away last year, poor soul. He was 88, lived a good long life, I guess.
- He wanted folks to see all the different art Black people made.
- Not just one kinda thing, but all sorts.
The movie, it shows how Black art changed over all them years, them two centuries. It came out on February 9th, just a little while ago. You can watch it on somethin’ called HBO, if you got that fancy TV stuff. I just saw a bit on the news, ya know?
They talked about some fancy word in the movie, chiaroscuro. Sounded like “kee-ah-roh-SCURO”. Big word for somethin’ simple, really. It just means usin’ light and dark to make things look… well, to make ’em look good, I guess. Like when you paint a picture and some parts are bright and some are dark. Makes it pop, ya know? Makes it look real.
This chiaroscuro thing, it wasn’t just for Black art, mind you. Lots of them old-timey painters used it. Fellas like Leonardo da Vinci, you heard of him, right? And that other fella, what’s his name… Rembrandt, that’s it. They all used light and dark to make their paintin’s look good. It’s like magic, almost.
Now, they also talked about somethin’ called black light. That’s a different kinda light. It makes things glow in the dark, special paints and inks, they said. You ever seen them posters that look all crazy under a black light? That’s what they’re talkin’ about. Makes things look kinda… psychedelic, they called it. Another big word!
So, this movie, “Black Art”, it’s about all this stuff. About how Black artists made art, how they used light and dark, and how they showed the world what they could do. It’s important, they say, to know about this. To see what Black folks have been doin’ in the art world for all them years.
It ain’t just about paintin’ pretty pictures, ya know? It’s about tellin’ stories, showin’ feelin’s, and makin’ people think. And that’s what this “Black Art” is all about, near as I can figure. It’s about showin’ the world what Black artists have done and what they’re still doin’. It’s about rememberin’ folks like David Driskell and all the other artists who made a difference. And that’s a good thing, I reckon.
So, yeah, that’s what I know ’bout “Black Art”. Not much, maybe, but enough to make ya think a little. It’s good to learn new things, even if they got big, fancy words like “chiaroscuro” and “psychedelic”. Just gotta listen close and try to understand, that’s all.
