Alright, let’s talk about them real Spartan helmets, you know, the kind them fellas wore way back when. I ain’t no scholar or nothin’, but I seen some pictures and heard some stories, so I’ll tell ya what I know.
Now, them helmets, they weren’t just any ol’ hats, ya hear? They was made of bronze, that strong metal stuff, and they covered the whole head and neck. Kept ya safe from swords and spears and such. Not like them flimsy things they sell in stores now, them helmets was heavy and tough, real tough. Like my old cast iron pan! You could probably beat a wolf over the head with one of them and it wouldn’t even dent.
Them Spartans, they were fierce fighters, everyone knows that. And a good helmet was mighty important for a fighter. I reckon it was just as important as a good sharp spear. Wouldn’t want yer head getting bashed in, would ya? Them helmets weren’t all the same, mind you. Some were plain, others had fancy stuff on ’em, like feathers and decorations. But they all had one job: protect the head of the fella wearin’ it.
I heard tell that these helmets weren’t just for Spartans, though. Seems like lots of folks in ancient Greece wore ’em. Different towns, different colonies, they all had their own workshops makin’ helmets. Some were a little bit different, you know, maybe with the cheek pieces joined up at the bottom or somethin’. But they were all pretty much the same idea: a big ol’ metal pot to keep your brains in.
Corinthian helmet, that’s what they called it sometimes, named after some city I reckon. Them helmets were the best back then. They covered the head, the whole head and neck so you’d be safe. But as time went on they weren’t as good anymore. Folks started wearin’ different types, you know, lighter ones that let them see and move better. But I still think them old Corinthian helmets were the best for protection.
Now, you can find pictures of these helmets all over the place. And you can even buy replicas, I heard. Some of them are pretty good, look just like the real thing. Others, well, they’re more like toys, not strong enough to protect ya from nothin’. If you want a real spartan helmet, you probably gotta go dig one up outta the ground somewhere. But good luck with that, ha! I bet them archaeologists wouldn’t take kindly to you pokin’ around their dig sites. And even then, it’d probably be all rusted and beat up.
If you go lookin’ around online, you can find all sorts of places selling spartan helmets. Some call ‘em “collectible helmets”, some call ‘em “replica helmets”, some even call ’em “Roman helmets” which is plain silly, but what do I know? They got all kinds, from cheap plastic ones to fancy ones that cost a pretty penny. You can even find ones like they used in that movie, “300”. You know the one, with all them muscle-y fellas yellin’ and fightin’. Them helmets look pretty cool, but I bet they ain’t as strong as the real thing. They was just for show after all.
And another thing, I seen some folks sellin’ these helmets with armor and such. They call it a “muscle armor jacket” sometimes, make ya look all big and strong like them Spartans. I don’t know if it would actually protect ya much, but I reckon it’d make you feel like a tough guy, huh? You’d think that sort of stuff would rust somethin’ fierce though and need to be cleaned off pretty often, especially if it got wet. Probably why you don’t see folks running around the streets wearing armor today.
So, that’s about all I know about real spartan helmets. They were tough, they were important, and they helped them Spartans be the fearsome warriors they were. If you want to learn more, I reckon you gotta go read some books or somethin’. Me? I’m just an old woman, but I know what I know. And if you see a helmet like that in the field, best not go picking it up, it might belong to the devil!
Anyways, that’s the end of my rambling. Them helmets were important back in the day, but they are just stories and pictures for us now. Still, it’s good to know a bit about the past, I reckon. Even if it’s just about old helmets. It teaches you how people lived, and how they fought, and how they protected themselves.
