Well, let me tell you somethin’ about these here…what do you call ’em… natural sculptures. Yeah, that’s it. Sculptures made by nature, or folks usin’ nature stuff, you know?
I saw some pictures once, these fellas, Martin Hill and Philippa Jones, they was messin’ with dirt and stuff, makin’ art. Real fancy stuff, but all from the ground, you know? Like, takin’ dirt and makin’ it into somethin’ else. I tell ya, it’s somethin’ else. They call it “Earth to Earth.” Sounds right, don’t it? Comin’ from the earth, goin’ back to the earth. Just like us, I reckon.
Then there’s this other fella, Benjamin Von Wong. He’s a bit of a show-off, always makin’ a big fuss about the Earth and all. Heard he did somethin’ big on “Earth Overshoot Day.” Don’t rightly know what that is, but it sounds important. He used all sorts of stuff, leaves and branches and whatnot, to make big, giant pictures. Real pretty, but makes you think, too. Like, are we usin’ up too much stuff? Probably are, the way things are goin’.

- All this stuff, just lyin’ around, and some folks can make it into somethin’ beautiful.
- I used to make mud pies when I was a kid. Guess that was my kind of natural sculpture, huh?
Now, there’s this other fella, Andy Goldsworthy, he’s a real big deal in this natural sculpture business. They even gave him a medal, an “OBE,” whatever that is. Fancy folks and their fancy names. He takes rocks and sticks and leaves, and he makes things, right there where he finds ‘em. Sometimes in the woods, sometimes in the city, even! He calls it “Land Art” or “Environmental Art.” Sounds about right. He ain’t usin’ no plastic or nothin’. Just plain old rocks and dirt, stuff you find everywhere.
I remember when I was a young’un, we didn’t have no fancy toys. We played with rocks and sticks. We built forts and made little houses for the bugs. Guess we was makin’ our own natural sculptures, too, just didn’t know it. We didn’t have no fancy names for it, that’s for sure. Just call it playin’, that’s all.
These natural sculptures, they ain’t like them statues you see in town, all made of stone or metal. These are different. They’re made of stuff that’ll go back to the earth sooner or later. Leaves dry up and blow away, sticks rot, rocks might stay a bit longer, but even they’ll crumble in time. Nothin’ lasts forever, you know? That’s kinda the point, I think.
It’s like, these artists, they’re showin’ us how nature is already beautiful, and how we can use it to make even more beautiful things. And it ain’t gotta be fancy or complicated. Just a pile of rocks can be beautiful, if you look at it right. A bunch of leaves scattered on the ground, that can be beautiful, too. It’s all in how you see it.
I saw a picture once, this fella, Goldsworthy I think it was, he made a circle of leaves on the water. And then the wind came and blew it away. Just like that. Gone. And that was the art. It wasn’t about makin’ somethin’ that would last forever, it was about makin’ somethin’ beautiful for that moment. Kinda makes you think about life, don’t it? Here one minute, gone the next.
So, next time you’re out walkin’, take a look around. See the beauty in the rocks and the trees and the dirt. Maybe even try makin’ somethin’ yourself. You don’t need no fancy tools or nothin’. Just your hands and whatever you can find. Who knows, maybe you’ll make your own natural sculpture. And even if it don’t last forever, well, that’s okay. The beauty was in the makin’, not the keepin’. That’s what I think, anyway.
Natural sculpture, it’s a way of lookin’ at the world, I reckon. Seein’ the beauty in the everyday things, the things we take for granted. And it’s a way of connectin’ with nature, too. Reminds us where we come from, and where we’re goin’. Back to the earth, just like them leaves and sticks and rocks.
