Graffiti on Wall Art: Cool Street Art or Vandalism?
Well, let me tell ya, this thing, this “graffiti,” it’s somethin’ else. Folks call it all sorts of names, some say it’s art, some say it’s just plain mess. But what is it, really? It’s like drawin’ on things, you know? Walls, bridges, trains, anywhere you can get your hands on. Been around longer than any of us, I reckon.
Now, some folks get all worked up about it, call it vandalism. Say it’s ruinin’ property. And yeah, sometimes it is. Like if someone goes and paints all over a pretty picture someone else already made, that ain’t right. That’s just bad manners, like spoilin’ good food. If someone draws on your house without askin’, well that just isn’t right, now is it? It’s kinda like stealin’ corn from your neighbor’s field. It ain’t yours, so you shouldn’t touch it.
- But then there’s other times, when it’s… different.
- When it makes you stop and think.
- When it tells a story, or shows you somethin’ you ain’t seen before.
They say some of it’s about “identity” and “politics.” Fancy words, them. But what it means is, people are tryin’ to say somethin’. They’re tryin’ to tell you who they are, what they believe in, what they’re mad about. It’s like shoutin’ but with paint instead of your voice. Like when the young’uns holler at the town meeting. It makes you take notice.
It’s funny, ain’t it? Some of this graffiti, it looks like a chicken scratched it out, all messy and hard to read. But then you look closer, and you see somethin’ there. You see colors, shapes, ideas. It’s like lookin’ at clouds, sometimes you see a dog, sometimes you see a wagon, it all depends on how you look at it. It makes you think, that’s for sure. Like lookin’ at them fancy modern art pictures down at the city museum, all swirls and dots.
And this “street art,” that’s a whole ‘nother thing. People seem to like that more. They say it “brings benefit” and “good to society.” I guess it’s ‘cause it’s prettier, maybe? More organized? I don’t know. Seems to me it’s all just paint on a wall, one way or another. Some of it’s pretty, some of it’s ugly, some of it makes sense, some of it don’t. Just like life, I guess.
Some say it ain’t art unless it’s in a fancy place, like a museum. But I say, art is anywhere you find it. It could be in a field of sunflowers, in a sunset, or even on a dirty old wall. It’s all in how you look at it. It’s about seein’ the beauty in the everyday things, even the things that other folks might call trash. And goodness knows, I’ve seen a lot of beauty in my lifetime.
Now, they say only a little bit of it is done by those gang fellas, less than 10%, so they say. Most of it is just folks tryin’ to express themselves, or maybe just havin’ a bit of fun. Kids these days, they got all sorts of ways to get themselves into trouble, and paintin’ on walls ain’t the worst of it, I reckon. It could be worse, they could be out there stealin’ chickens, like them no-good Johnson boys from down the road.
So, is it art or vandalism? Well, I reckon it’s both. It depends on who’s lookin’ at it, and what they see. It depends on the message, and the way it’s delivered. It depends on whether it’s hurtin’ someone, or helpin’ them see the world in a new way. It ain’t as simple as black and white, that’s for sure. Life rarely is, you know?
And honestly, sometimes I think folks just like to complain. They gotta have somethin’ to fuss about. If it ain’t graffiti, it’ll be somethin’ else. That’s just the way people are. Can’t please everyone, can you? So, if someone wants to paint on a wall, and it ain’t hurtin’ nobody, well, I say let ’em. Life’s too short to worry about every little thing. And if it brightens up a dull old wall, well, that ain’t such a bad thing, now is it?
And that’s all I gotta say about that. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go check on my tomato plants.
