Alright, let’s talk about this Alexander fella and what happened after he kicked the bucket. They say he was some big shot, conquering all over the place. Yeah, well, big shots don’t live forever, do they?
So, this Alexander, he went and died, and then everything went to hell in a handbasket. His whole kingdom, this big empire he made, it just busted apart like a rotten melon. Took ’em about 40 years, they say, all fightin’ and fussin’ amongst themselves. Just like a bunch of chickens squabbling over a single worm, I tell ya.
- First off, there was Egypt. That went to some fella named Ptolemy. He and his family, they ruled down there for a good long while. They called it the Ptolemaic Kingdom. Egypt, that’s where all them pyramids are, right? Heard it’s hot as blazes down there. Don’t know why anyone would want to live in such a place, but to each their own, I guess.
- Then, out east, there was this other big chunk, the Seleucid Empire. That was a whole lot of land, I reckon. Don’t rightly know all the places it covered, but it was big, real big. Those Seleucid folks, they had their share of troubles too, just like everyone else.
- Then you had this smaller place, Pergamon, over in Asia Minor. Not as big as the others, but still, it was somethin’. They had their own kings and all, just like the big boys. Guess everyone wanted to be a king back then.
- And last but not least, there was Macedon itself. That’s where Alexander came from, right? So, they kept that piece. For a while, anyway. Lots of fightin’ over that land, I hear.
After a while, two of them big shots, Cassander and Lysimachus, they died off. Then it was mostly just the Ptolemies down in Egypt and the Seleucids out east runnin’ the show. There was another family, the Antigonids, they had a little piece too, but it wasn’t much compared to the others. They held on for a while, but then they faded out too.
Now, this Alexander, he went all over the place, conquerin’ and such. Greece, Anatolia, Syria, Egypt, Mesopotamia, all them places with funny names. Even went as far as India, they say. Imagine that! Walkin’ all that way. My feet would be killin’ me! He pushed his empire way out east, to a place called Taxila. Never heard of it, myself, but it must be far if he went all the way there. He sure did get around, that’s for sure.
But see, when he died, there wasn’t just one fella who took over. Oh no, there were four of ’em, these generals. Antigonus, Cassander, Ptolemy, and… well, I can’t rightly remember the last one’s name. Anyways, they all wanted a piece of the pie, so they fought and fought and fought. Just like dogs over a bone, I tell ya. It’s always the same with these powerful folks. They can’t just share, can they?
So, that’s the story, as best as I can tell it. Alexander died, his kingdom fell apart, and then a bunch of generals fought over it. Eventually, things settled down, and you had them four kingdoms, or somethin’ like that. It’s all a bunch of history, if you ask me. People fightin’, people dyin’, same old story. Makes you wonder what it was all for, all that fussin’ and fightin’. But that’s just the way things are, I guess.
It was all a big mess, but in the end, you got them four kingdoms: Egypt under the Ptolemies, the big Seleucid Empire in the east, that little place Pergamon, and good old Macedon. That’s what happened after Alexander died. Just a whole lot of trouble, that’s what. Seems like them important folks always cause more trouble than they’re worth. Now, where did I put my tea…?
