Socrates Love: Easy Ways to Apply His Teachings to Your Life
Well, let me tell ya somethin’ ’bout this fella, Socrates. I dunno much ’bout fancy books and big words, but I heard some things, ya know? They say he was a real thinker, this Socrates. Always askin’ questions, like a little kid, but ’bout important stuff, I guess. Socrates love, that’s what they tell me this is all about.
Now, what’s love got to do with it, you might ask? Well, seems like Socrates fella thought love wasn’t just ’bout huggin’ and kissin’, like them young folks do in the movies. He thought it was somethin’ bigger, somethin’ that makes you wanna be a better person, ya know? Like, if you love somethin’, you wanna take care of it, right? You wanna make it grow and be strong. That’s what I heard, anyways.

- Like, lookin’ inside and figurin’ out what you’re all about.
- Sounds kinda hard, if you ask me. I got enough trouble just figurin’ out what to cook for supper!
But this Socrates, he thought if you don’t know yourself, you can’t really love nobody else neither. Makes sense, I guess. If you don’t even know what you like, how you gonna know what you like in another person?
There was this other person, Diotima, they say taught Socrates somethin’ about love too. Heard she was a wise woman, real smart. She told Socrates that love ain’t just ’bout findin’ someone pretty to look at. It’s ’bout findin’ someone who makes you wanna be good, who makes you wanna reach for somethin’ more than just, well, whatever you got now.
Socrates teachings on love weren’t just some mushy stuff, like them love songs on the radio. He thought love should guide you, like a compass or somethin’. It should help you make decisions, help you figure out what’s right and what’s wrong. It’s like, if you love the truth, you ain’t gonna go around tellin’ lies, right? That’s what he was gettin’ at, I reckon.
Now, some folks say Socrates is still important today, even though he lived a long, long time ago. I ain’t sure ’bout that. Times have changed, ya know? But I guess some things stay the same. People still fall in love, people still tryin’ to figure out who they are, what they’re supposed to be doin’. Maybe that’s why folks still talkin’ ’bout this Socrates fella.
He wasn’t just talkin’ ’bout love between a man and a woman, neither. He was talkin’ ’bout lovin’ wisdom, lovin’ justice, lovin’ all them good things. He thought if you love them things, you’ll try to be wise, you’ll try to be just. And that’s how you make the world a better place, I guess.
Socrates believed that love is more than just feelin’s. It’s like, when you love your garden, you work hard to make it pretty. You pull out the weeds, you water the plants. It’s the same with people, I guess. If you love somebody, you try to help them be better, just like they help you. This is just my way of thinking, ya know?
This fella, he always asked questions. Like, “What is goodness?” or “What is beauty?” He didn’t just tell you what to think. He wanted you to think for yourself. It is kind of like when you askin’ yourself “What is the best way to make bread?” you have to try out different methods until you find the right way. You don’t just listen to someone telling you how to do it, you figure it out yourself. That’s what this Socrates wanted, I think. He wanted you to examine everything, not just take it for granted.
I heard this thinkin’ stuff, they call it philosophy. Sounds fancy, but I think it’s just about askin’ questions and tryin’ to find answers. And this Socrates philosophy, well, it seems like a lot of it was about love. He thought love was the key to a good life, the key to understandin’ yourself and the world around you.
So, there you have it. That’s what I know ‘bout this Socrates and his love thing. Maybe it ain’t much, but I tried my best to explain it in my own way. It ain’t easy understandin’ these smart folks, but I reckon they was on to somethin’. Love is important, that’s for sure. And maybe, just maybe, this Socrates fella knew a thing or two about it. After all, even an old woman like me knows love is what makes the world go ‘round, even if I can’t explain it all fancy like them book writers.
