Well, let me tell ya about this here “cathedra painting,” whatever that fancy name means. I ain’t no artist or nothin’, but I reckon I can tell ya what I see and what I think about it. It’s just paint on somethin’, right? Like them pictures they got in the Sears catalog, only bigger, I guess.
What’s this “Cathedra” Thing Anyway?
First off, this “cathedra” word, it sounds all highfalutin. I heard tell it’s got somethin’ to do with churches and them big chairs they got. Maybe it’s like paintin’ a picture of a fancy chair? Or maybe it’s just the name the fella give it, like callin’ your dog “Spot” even if he ain’t got no spots. Folks do strange things, I tell ya.
Seems like some fellas, they like to paint with just one color. Like that blue one, they call it “monochrome” or somethin’. I seen a picture of it once, all blue, no nothin’ else. My grandson, he tried to explain it to me, said it was all about the feelin’ and the color itself. I told him, “Boy, if I wanted to see just blue, I’d look at the sky!” But I guess some folks see more in it than I do. They say that blue ain’t just blue, it’s got layers and depth, like a deep well. Who knew? All that fuss over one color.

Big Pictures, Big Ideas, or Just Big Paint Splatters?
Then there’s these big ol’ paintings, the ones they call “monumental.” They’re bigger than my barn door, I swear! And folks stand around starin’ at ’em, like they’re tryin’ to figure out a puzzle. My neighbor, she went to one of them fancy art museums in the city. She come back sayin’ she didn’t understand it, but it made her think. I reckon that’s somethin’, makin’ a person think. But I still think a picture of a pretty flower or a nice cow is a whole lot easier on the eyes. These big ones, they just look like a bunch of color splashed around to me. But what do I know? I ain’t no city slicker.
I heard tell there’s different kinds of paint too, like this “acrylic” stuff. Seems like it dries faster than the oil paint my grandpa used to use. He painted our old shed red, took him forever, smelled somethin’ awful too. Nowadays, folks even got workshops where they teach ya how to paint with this acrylic stuff. My niece, she went to one of them, came home with a picture of a bowl of fruit. It was kinda crooked, but she was proud of it. I guess that’s what matters, right? Do what makes ya happy, even if it ain’t perfect. They even got these paintin’s in churches. Them big old buildings with the stained glass windows. Now them windows, they got purdy colors, showin’ stories and such. But I heard there’s more than just windows, there’s paintin’s too. Big ones, little ones, all over the place. Reckon they wanted to make the place look nice and special for God.
Paintin’ for Everyone, Even Old Folks Like Me
I seen some books about paintin’ for beginners. They got pictures and instructions, makin’ it look easy. Maybe I’ll try it someday, when I ain’t got nothin’ better to do. Probably just end up with a big mess, but who cares? It ain’t like I’m tryin’ to be the next Picass-o or whatever his name is. And speaking of books, you can find all sorts of books about paintin’ and art, even pictures they took. They sell ’em everywhere, even online now, can you believe it? My grandson showed me how to order things on that “Amazon” thing. It’s like a giant Sears catalog, only bigger and with more stuff. You can get lost in there for hours.
So, this “cathedra painting,” it’s a whole bunch of things, I guess. It’s about color and shapes and feelin’s. It’s about big pictures and little pictures, churches and chairs and who knows what else. It’s about folks tryin’ to express themselves, even if it don’t make sense to everybody. And maybe, just maybe, it’s about somethin’ more, somethin’ deeper, somethin’ that even an old lady like me can appreciate, even if I can’t rightly explain it. It’s just paint on a somethin’, but sometimes, that paint can tell a story, or make you feel somethin’, or just make you stop and think for a minute. And in this crazy world, that’s gotta be worth somethin’. And that’s all I got to say about that “cathedra paintin’.” Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go feed them chickens.
More Words about Cathedra and paintin’ stuff
Someone was talkin’ about some fella named Newman, Barnett Newman, I think. They said he painted that there big blue picture. He used some fancy paints, oil and somethin’ called “magna,” whatever that is. Sounds like somethin’ you put in your car, not somethin’ you paint with. But I guess these artists, they got their own ways of doin’ things. And that “cathedra Petri”? Now that sounds like somethin’ the Pope might be sittin’ on. Or maybe it’s just another one of them fancy words they use to make things sound important. They been talkin’ about it since way back when, the third century, they said. That’s a long time ago. Folks been arguin’ about stuff for a long, long time, I tell ya.
Anyways, if you want to learn more about paintin’, there’s plenty of books and places to go. But if you ask me, the best way to learn is to just do it. Grab a brush, grab some paint, and go to town. Don’t worry about makin’ it perfect, just have fun with it. And who knows, maybe you’ll end up paintin’ your own “cathedra,” whatever that is. Just don’t forget to clean up your mess when you’re done. Ain’t nothin’ worse than dried paint on your good Sunday shoes.
