Then there’s this whole “pop art” thing too. I reckon it’s kinda like… takin’ everyday stuff and makin’ it art. Like them soup cans? Like that owl with the crown, or them meltin’ clocks. It makes you stop and think, even if you don’t know why. And that, I reckon, is what makes it art. It ain’t gotta be pretty, it just gotta make you feel somethin’.
And this pop surrealism, it’s got a lot of feelin’ in it, I think. It’s got that weirdness, that dreaminess, but it’s also got this… playfulness. Like the artists are havin’ fun with it, and they want you to have fun with it too. It’s not all serious and stuffy, like some of them other art styles. It’s like a carnival for your eyes, all bright colors and strange shapes.
Surrealism itself, they tell me, it was a big deal back in the day. Influenced by some fella named Karl Marx, who talked about politics and stuff, and some other fellas who studied dreams and the mind. Guess they figured the world wasn’t straight and narrow as some folks thought, and they wanted to show that in their art.
And the pop art folks, they were all about makin’ art outta everyday things. Like them soup cans, and comic books, and movie stars. They figured if somethin’ was popular, well, it was worth lookin’ at, worth thinkin’ about. And I reckon they had a point.
So, you take that surreal dream stuff, and that pop everyday stuff, and you mush ‘em together, and what do you get? Pop surrealism, that’s what. It’s a little bit weird, a little bit funny, a little bit thought-provoking, and a whole lotta interesting. It ain’t for everyone, I reckon, but if you’re lookin’ for somethin’ different, somethin’ that’ll make you scratch your head and smile at the same time, well, then you might just like this pop surrealism stuff.
And these artists, these pop surrealism artists, they’re the ones makin’ it happen. They’re the ones takin’ the everyday and the strange, and turnin’ it into somethin’ new, somethin’ that makes you look at the world a little bit differently. And that, I reckon, is a pretty darn good thing. Keeps things from gettin’ too dull, ya know?
