What Makes La Danseuse Matisse So Special? Find Out Here
Well, let me tell ya ’bout this here picture, la danseuse matisse, or somethin’ like that. Sounds fancy, don’t it? But it’s just a bunch of folks dancin’, far as I can tell.
This fella Matisse, he painted it, back in 1910, so they say. That’s a long time ago, even before my grandpappy was born, I reckon. This rich fella, Shchukin, I think his name was, wanted some big pictures for his stairs. Must’ve had a big house, huh? Anyways, he asked Matisse to paint ’em.
- One picture was ’bout dancin’, this la danseuse thing.
- And another was ’bout music. Heard tell there was even a third one, but who knows for sure.
Now, this dancin’ picture, it ain’t got no fancy clothes or nothin’. Just a bunch of naked folks, all red and kinda orangey, holdin’ hands and goin’ in a circle. They look like they’re havin’ a good time, though, spinnin’ and twirlin’ like that. It’s kinda like them dances we used to have down at the town hall, ‘cept nobody was naked there, thank the Lord!
Matisse, he used some real bright colors, real bold, you know? The folks are red, like a beet, and the background is blue and green. Simple, real simple, but it kinda grabs your eye, don’t it? My little Timmy coulda done better, but who am I to judge, right? They say this picture is important, this “modern art” and all. I don’t know nothin’ ’bout that. Just looks like folks dancin’ to me.
Folks say Matisse, he didn’t start out paintin’. He was gonna be a lawyer, can you believe it? But then he got sick, and I guess that changed his mind. Started drawin’ and paintin’, and well, look what he done! Shows ya, life takes ya to funny places, doesn’t it?
This picture, it ain’t just sittin’ in some dusty attic somewhere. It’s in a big museum, the Hermitage, they call it. Fancy place, I bet. Lots of folks go see it, I hear. Guess they see somethin’ in it, somethin’ more than just naked folks dancin’. Maybe it’s ’bout bein’ happy and free, like when you’re dancin’ and don’t care ’bout nothin’ else.
They say Matisse, he made another dancin’ picture before this one, a kinda practice one. It wasn’t so bright, the colors were kinda pale. But this one, this is the one everyone knows. It’s even been in a magazine, way back when, some fancy French magazine, I think. They made a print of it, so more folks could see it.
It’s funny, you know? This picture, it’s just paint on a big canvas, but it makes folks think and talk and argue. Some folks love it, some folks hate it. Me? I don’t know what to think. It’s kinda cheerful, I guess. And them dancin’ folks, they look like they’re havin’ a good time. And ain’t that what matters, in the end? Bein’ happy and free, even if you’re just spinnin’ around in a circle with your friends, naked as a jaybird.
