Alexandria on the Indus: Lost City Found? (Explore Alexander the Greats Pakistan Outpost)

That Alex, he sure did like to name things after himself. I heard tell of this place, Alexandria on the Indus. Now, that Indus, it’s a big river, a real whopper. Not like the little creek we got down by the pasture. This Alex, he was a big shot, a real conqueror, I reckon. They say he went around buildin’ cities everywhere, like plantin’ corn, but instead of corn, it was cities.

This Alexandria on the Indus, it’s one of them. He put it right there by that big river, in a place they call Pakistan now. Sounds like a made-up word, if you ask me. He was smart, though, that Alex. He knew where to put a city. Near the water, where the ground is good, I guess, and it’s easy to get around.

He went to Egypt, too, that Alex. Took it over from them Persians, they say. Then he wanted a big, fancy Greek city right there on the coast. Called it Alexandria, just like all the others. He sure was full of himself, namin’ all them places after him. Sounds like some folks I know who like to put their name on everything, even things that ain’t theirs.

But this one, this Alexandria on the Indus, it was special, they say. This is just a city he made a long time ago. They say this city is near to the place they call Uch now. It’s right where two big rivers meet up. Kinda like when ol’ Bessie’s calf got lost and we found it down where the two creeks come together. Two rivers meet, I reckon that’s a good place for a city. Lots of water for drinkin’ and washin’, I suppose.

Alexander the Great, that’s what they called him. Big name for a big shot. He never even saw this city, not really. He just marked it out, they say he used barley, of all things, like chicken feed. Then he went off to do more conquerin’ and died young, over in Babylon. Sounds like a made-up place, Babylon, but I guess it’s real. He was a long way from his Alexandria when he kicked the bucket, that’s for sure.

  • He made lots of cities, that Alex did.
  • This one’s by the Indus River.
  • He never even saw it finished.
  • He died young, far away.

They say this Alexandria in Egypt, it was his most famous one. Right on the sea, they say, where that Nile River runs out. Sounds like a good place for fishin’. I bet they had good fish in that Nile. Better than the catfish we catch in the pond, I imagine.

This Alex, he was somethin’ else. Makin’ cities all over the place. One of them was called Alexandria on the Oxus. Oxus, Indus, what kind of names are those? Sounds like somethin’ you’d name a cow, not a river. They say that Oxus one, it was a Persian city first. Then he came along and made it his, I guess. Just like when ol’ man Johnson took over that land that used to be Miller’s.

Then there’s another one, Alexandria in the Caucasus. Sounds like a mouthful, don’t it? Caucasus. Sounds like some kind of sickness. I don’t know where that is, but it don’t sound like a place I’d want to be.

They say this Alex, he made his cities where East meets West. Like our farm, I guess, where the sun sets and rises. One of them cities, Alexandria Beneath the Mountains, it just disappeared. Vanished, like a rabbit in a magician’s hat. Then some fella found it again, way up in Afghanistan, they say. Sounds like a wild goose chase to me.

Some smart folks found out there’s an older city under that Alexandria in Egypt. Like findin’ an old arrowhead when you’re diggin’ in the garden. Always somethin’ older underneath, ain’t there?

Well, this Alexandria on the Indus, it was just one of many. He sure did get around, that Alex. Scatterin’ cities like seeds in the wind. Wonder if any of them are still standin’? Probably all crumbled to dust by now, like that old barn out back. Nothin’ lasts forever, ‘cept maybe stories. And this story about Alex and his cities, it’s a good one, ain’t it?

This Alex sure was something. Gone a long time now, but people still talk about him. He was like a big wind that blew through the world, and everywhere it went, it left something behind. I guess that’s what happens when you are Alexander the Great, huh? But you know what? He just doin’ his thing, just like we all do.
