These days, you see all the young folks, heads all covered up. Not just in winter, oh no. All year round! Back in my day, a hat was for keepin’ the sun off your face in the field, or the rain off your head when you was walkin’ to the market. Now? They wear ’em inside, outside, rain or shine. Fancy luxury hats, they call ’em. Lordy.
My grandson, he’s got a whole shelf full of these things. Baseball caps, mostly. Different colors, different pictures on ’em. Says he collects them. Collects ’em! Like they’re some kinda treasure. Says they are high-end hats and very expensive. Well, when I was young, a hat was a hat. You wore it ’til it wore out, then you got another one. Simple as that. These new ones, they cost more than a week’s worth of groceries! It’s a crazy world we are living in.
He tried to show me one the other day, all proud like. Said it was a “designer” hat. Designer! What in tarnation does that even mean? It looked like a regular old cap to me, ‘cept it had some fancy letters stitched on it. And he paid a small fortune for it, he said. I nearly fainted. Luxury hats for men, can you imagine that? In my day, a man’s hat was for workin’, not for showin’ off.
He told me about how people buy these hats online now. Online! You don’t even try ’em on first? Just click a button and spend your money on somethin’ you ain’t even seen in person? Sounds like a good way to get ripped off, if you ask me. And these young people, they don’t know no better. They want what the other kids have. Gotta keep up with the Joneses, I suppose. Even if it means spending all your money on a silly hat.
There are all kinds of these luxury hats. They got these things, it is called bucket hats, look like somethin’ a fisherman would wear. And then they got some other ones that is flat on the top. They call those flat caps. I tell ya, I’ve seen it all now. But they sure are expensive. I would rather spend my money on good food.

I asked him once, why do you need all these hats? He said he gotta have the right hat for the right outfit. The right outfit! We used to have one outfit for work, and one for Sunday best. That was it! Times change. They got different hats for different days of the week. Now, the young people love buying hats. They buy these hats from all over the places. And each hat is worth a small fortune.
He says there are all kinds of places you can buy them online. Fancy stores with names I can’t even pronounce. He showed me one website, had all these pictures of hats, and the prices! You wouldn’t believe it. Hundreds of dollars for one hat! And these young people, they are just eatin’ it up. The prices are crazy.
And don’t even get me started on the ones with the fancy logos. Like a little animal or somethin’. He says those are the most expensive ones. ‘Cause they’re “brand name” or somethin’. Brand name! What a load of hogwash. A hat’s a hat, no matter what kinda critter you sew onto it. This is one of the most popular luxury hats brands. People just love them, don’t know why. But they are too expensive.
I guess I’m just old-fashioned. I don’t understand this newfangled world. But I’ll tell you one thing, I wouldn’t trade my old sun hat for a whole closet full of these fancy luxury hats. It’s seen me through many a summer, and it still does the job just fine. And it didn’t cost me an arm and a leg, neither. These young kids today, they just don’t know the value of a dollar.
I remember when a hat was just a hat. Now it is like a status, what is a status? It is like, people use hats to show off. Anyway, I don’t understand it. But young people like it. They spend all their money on it. It is their choice. But I still think it is silly. I would rather buy a good pair of shoes than a hat. But maybe that’s just me.
