This here abstract Greek mythology modern art, it’s a real head-scratcher, ain’t it? See, this here newfangled art, it ain’t like them old pictures we used to see. Back in my day, pictures looked like somethin’ you could recognize. A cow looked like a cow, and a person looked like a person. This new stuff, though…it’s all squiggles and colors, all jumbled up. Not like them paintings from long ago, you know the ones?
They say it’s about them old Greek stories, them myths. Gods and monsters and heroes, all that. You know, like that fella with the wings on his feet, or that lady with snakes for hair. Heard them stories when I was a little girl, sittin’ by the fire. My grandma, she could tell a story, that one. Made those old gods seem real as the chickens in the yard. These new pictures, they don’t show them stories straight up, though. They use all sorts of shapes and colors to, ya know, hint at the story. It is all about what they called “abstract art“.
Like, you might see a big red blob, and that’s supposed to be that angry god, the one who throws lightning. Or a bunch of swirly lines, and that’s the ocean, where that sea monster lives. It’s like a puzzle, this modern art. You gotta use your imagination, they say. It is not easy for an old gal like me.
I remember them old Greek stories, those Greek myths. Lots of fightin’ and carryin’ on. Gods messin’ with people, people messin’ with gods. Big families, lots of drama. Just like real life, but with more magic and monsters. That’s what I think anyway. These pictures, they try to show all that, but in a different way. They use shapes, colors, forms and all them gestural marks. They do not show you the real thing, but something like behind the real thing. Hard to say, ain’t it?
- That one fella, touched everything, turned to gold. Midas, they called him.
- Or that other one, pushin’ that rock up a hill, forever and ever. What was his name? Sisy… Sisy-something.
- And that box, the one they told that girl not to open. Pandora, that’s it.
- There is also that hero with the weak heel. Achilles, or something like that.
I reckon these abstract pictures, they’re tryin’ to show the feelin’s of those old stories. The anger, the sadness, the, uh… the bigness of it all. Not the actual people or places, but the… the spirit of it. Like a dream, kinda. You don’t see things clear in a dream, but you feel ’em. These are all part of that Greek mythology.
These young folks today, they like this abstract stuff. They say it makes ’em think. Me, I like a picture that tells a story plain and simple. But maybe that’s just ’cause I’m old-fashioned. Still, even an old gal like me can see that there’s somethin’ to these pictures. They make you wonder, they make you think. Maybe that’s the point.
This one paintin’ I saw, all blues and greens, swirly like. They said it was the sea god, Poseidon. Didn’t look like no man with a beard and a trident, like in the old books. But it felt like the ocean, wild and deep. Maybe that’s what they mean by abstract art based on Greek mythology, not showin’ the thing itself, but how it feels. They said these are all about symbols in modern Greek art.
Then there was another one, all reds and oranges, sharp lines and jagged edges. They said it was the god of war, Ares. Made me think of fire and fightin’, even though it didn’t look like a soldier or a battle. It was just… angry colors, angry shapes. Like a picture of anger itself. And they told me this was how those stories are still around today, in what we call the modern world.
They say these pictures are in museums, fancy places with big walls. People come from all over to stare at ’em. They stand there, lookin’ real serious, tryin’ to figure ’em out. I reckon it’s like readin’ a book, but with your eyes instead of your ears. Each picture’s a story, but you gotta figure out the words yourself. They say this kind of art started way back, like in the early 20th century.
Maybe it is not like them old paintings. There are different degrees, or levels, of the abstraction, they told me. This modern Greek art is not like them. I still like a good picture of a horse or a flower, somethin’ you can recognize right away. But I guess there’s room for all kinds of art in this world. Even the kind that makes your head spin a little.
So, this abstract Greek mythology modern art, it’s somethin’ else, ain’t it? It’s like them old stories, but told in a new way. A way that’s kinda messy, kinda confusin’, but also kinda… interestin’. Maybe it’s not so bad, this newfangled art. Maybe it’s just a different way of seein’ the world. And maybe, just maybe, an old gal like me can learn to see it too.
