This here talk is ’bout them Christian Samurai. You know, them fellas in Japan, long time ago. They was warriors, strong and brave, like them samurais always is. But these ones, they believed in Jesus, too.
Now, them samurais, they had this code, see? Honor and all that. This fella, Justo Takayama Ukon, Dom Justo some called him, he was one of them Christian Samurai. He believed in Jesus somethin’ fierce. He was a big shot, too, a high-ranked fella. This was way back in the 17th century, when them Catholic folks first went over to Japan.
He was livin’ by that samurai code, but also livin’ like Jesus said to. Hard to do both, I reckon. But he did it. He wasn’t the only one, neither. There was this other lady, Hosokawa Gracia, she was a Christian Samurai too. And that Paulo Miki, he was one of them martyrs, folks who died for believin’ in Jesus. They say he’s a big deal to them Catholic folks, a patron saint of Japan, whatever that means.
See, them samurais, they was warriors. Fought and all that. Started way back in the 12th century, I hear. Big time in the government, right up till 1868. Long time, huh? They was called “bushi” first, means fancy warriors, I guess. Then they just called all them warrior fellas “samurai”.
It ain’t easy to say what all them Christian Samurai did, back then. They read them holy books, I guess, and sang songs ’bout Jesus. They had them ceremonies, too, for the Buddha and other gods. Them bodhisattvas, they was like helpers, I think. It’s all mixed up, them believing in Jesus and Buddha both.

These Christian Samurai, they were somethin’ special. They dedicated their whole lives to somethin’, just like them regular samurais. But they added Jesus in there, too. That’s a whole other level of dedication, if you ask me.
There was a whole bunch of these Japanese Christians back then. Some of ’em was big shots, like Dom Justo. Others was just regular folks, I reckon. But they all had that same fire in ’em, that same belief. It’s powerful stuff, faith is.
Back in those days, being a samurai wasn’t just about fighting. It was a whole way of life, you see? They had this code they lived by, all about honor and loyalty. Sounds kinda tiring to me, but they seemed to like it. And these Christian Samurai, they took that code and they mixed it with their Christian beliefs.
You know, it makes you think about what’s really important in life. Is it fighting? Is it following some code? Or is it about something more, something deeper? These Christian Samurai, they seemed to think it was about something more. They found a way to combine their warrior life with their faith, and that’s something to think about.
It just goes to show you, people are complicated. They ain’t just one thing or another. They can be lots of things all at once. And that’s okay. That’s what makes life interesting, ain’t it? All these different kinds of people, all mixed up together, trying to figure things out. Just like them Christian Samurai did, way back when.
Times were different back then, that’s for sure. But some things never change. People are always looking for something to believe in, something to give their lives to. For these Christian Samurai, it was their faith and their warrior code.
I don’t know much about all this history stuff, but I know a good story when I hear one. And the story of these Christian Samurai, it’s a good one. It’s a story about faith, and courage, and being true to yourself, even when it’s hard.

And maybe, just maybe, it’ll make you appreciate them Christian Samurai, them fellas who tried to live by two codes, and did it with all their heart.
