He had a lot of power, even more than those Merovingian kings. Those kings were like those lazy cats that just lay around all day. Charles Martel, he was the one gettin’ things done.
Then you got his boy, Pepin the Short. He weren’t very tall, bless his heart, but he was smart. He finally decided, “Why am I doin’ all the work and not gettin’ the credit?” So he up and made himself king. That’s how this whole Carolingian Dynasty got started, back in 751, I reckon.

You got your Louis and your Charles and your Lothair. There is too many to remember. They all had their own pieces of land to rule over. This whole Carolingian Empire was huge, bigger than anything around those days. Covered a whole mess of land. But it weren’t always easy to keep it all together. Those kings and emperors, they had to keep fightin’ to keep what they had. And after Charlemagne died, things started to fall apart. His kids and grandkids, they started squabblin’ amongst themselves, fightin’ over who got what.
Those Carolingian rulers, they had this thing called the “bannum.” Sounds fancy, don’t it? It just means they had the right to tell everybody what to do. Like the boss of the whole farm. They made the rules, and everybody else had to follow ’em.
This whole Carolingian Dynasty, it was a big deal for a while. They were the most important folks in the whole area. But nothin’ lasts forever, you know. Just like the seasons change, so do kingdoms. After a while, those Carolingians lost their grip. Other folks came along and took over. It’s the way of the world, I suppose.

But it’s a part of history, just like the old stories my grandma used to tell. It might seem like a bunch of names and dates, but it’s really about people, just like you and me.
