Are There Snakes in Greece? Your Guide to Avoiding Them!
Well, some folks been askin’, are there snakes in Greece? I heard about this place, Greece, sound kinda fancy. Don’t know much ’bout it, but I sure know a thing or two ’bout snakes. They slither and slide, some folks is scared of ’em, some ain’t. So, you wanna know if they got snakes over there in Greece? I reckon they do.
Heard tell there’s this place called Greece, got lots of islands, like little pieces of land floating in the water. Some say, now this is just what I heard, some of them islands got no snakes at all. None! Can you believe it? An island with no snakes. Astypalaia, I think they call it. They say if you ask the folks living there, they’ll tell ya. No snakes there. Not a one.
But hold on there, that don’t mean all of Greece is snake-free. Nope. They got plenty of snakes in other parts, on the big piece of land they call the mainland. I think they said 21 different kinds! Imagine that, 21 kinds of snakes. They got ones called Boas, sound kinda big. And Whip snakes, bet those move fast.

Now, some of them snakes, they got poison. They call it venom, I think. If one of them bites ya, it can make ya real sick. They say the worst one they got is called an adder, or maybe they call it an ohia snake. Nasty critter, that one. Stays on the mainland, and some islands called Kefalonia and Corfu. Sounds like a miserable place if you ask me. Best to stay away from it if you can.
They got this one kind, called a Smooth Snake. Don’t sound too bad, does it? But don’t let the name fool ya. It can still bite. They say it grows to be about 60 centimeters long. That’s… well, that’s longer than my arm, I reckon. And they’re all over the place on that mainland, just slithering around.
They got all kinds of places for these snakes to live in, too. Some like the woods, some like the rocks, some like the water. Just like here, I suppose. Snakes is snakes, no matter where you go. You gotta watch where you step, especially in tall grass or near rocks.
So, are there snakes in Greece? You bet your bottom dollar there are. Lots of ’em. Different kinds of snakes in Greece, too. Some big, some small, some poisonous, some not. If you ask me, it’s just like everywhere else. You gotta be careful, keep your eyes peeled, and maybe you won’t run into any. But if you do, just give ’em their space. That’s what I always say. Live and let live, even if it’s a snake.
They say folks have been seeing all 22 types on the mainland and some of the islands. All over. I even heard they got one they call a worm snake. Imagine that a snake that looks like a worm.
Now, I ain’t no expert on Greece, mind you. Just tellin’ ya what I heard. But it seems to me like it’s a place with its share of critters, just like any other place. If you’re thinkin’ of goin’ there, just do your research, learn about the place, and be prepared for what you might find. And that includes snakes. Don’t say I didn’t warn ya!
If you are worried about the venom. Well, that is what makes you sick if you get bit. Some of them snakes have really bad venom. The ohia snake in Greece, that is the one to watch out for. That is the most dangerous snake in Greece, I heard. It is very venomous!
So, to answer your question, yes, there are snakes in Greece. Plenty of them. Different kinds. All over. Just be careful, and you’ll be alright. Probably. But watch out for them ohia snakes, for sure.
