Baroque and Victorian: How Are They Different? (Easy Explanation)
That Baroque, you know, it’s like, when them rich folks, they got money burnin’ a hole in their pockets. They gotta show it off, right? So they build them big houses, all fancy-like. Lots of gold and shiny stuff. It’s like they just threw everything they could think of at the wall and hoped it stuck. All them curves and swirls, make ya dizzy just lookin’ at it. And pictures, my lord, they got pictures of everything, all over the place. Some of it is real pretty, some, well, not so much.
That Victorian thing, now that’s a whole different story. Them folks, they was all proper and serious. Their houses, they was still big, but not so flashy. More like, they wanted folks to know they was important, but they didn’t wanna be too showy about it. Lots of dark wood, heavy curtains, keeps the sun out. Makes it kinda gloomy, if you ask me. They like them animal figures in furniture. You know, lion heads, bird claws. Not my thing, but each to their own, I always say.
So, Baroque, that’s the one that’s all about being big and loud, kinda like that neighbor’s rooster that won’t shut up. You know that Baroque is all about being extra, as them young folks are saying. It is all about being opulent, like, you know, my old neighbor that used to have that one golden tooth. Always flashing it around. And serious, oh so serious. You know, like that time when my old cat died. That is how serious Baroque is.
Victorian, that’s more like, you know, bein’ proper and mindin’ your manners. Like when you go to church and gotta sit up straight and not fidget. Not as much fun, but some folks like it that way. Victorian furniture is kind of manly. You know, like my old husband. All those human and animal figures. Oh, my old husband was obsessed with those kinds of things. And it is influenced by a lot of things, Gothic, Egyptian, Greek. Whatever that is.
- Baroque: All shiny and gold, like a king’s crown.
- Victorian: Dark and heavy, like that old wooden chest in the attic.
- Baroque: Lots of fancy details, like a wedding cake.
- Victorian: More plain, but still kinda fancy, like a Sunday dress.
I seen them Baroque buildings. It is a crazy style, you know. It is like they wanted to make churches look more impressive. I guess they wanted folks to come to the churches. The buildings are like, from another world. It is all impressive and dramatic. Like, that show my granddaughter is always watching. All drama and action.
That word, Baroque, they say it comes from some Portuguese word. Means some kind of messed up pearl. Well, that makes sense, I guess. It’s all fancy and everything, but it’s a little bit… much, you know? Like wearin’ all your jewelry at once. Just too much goin’ on. Some people said that it is an irregular pearl or stone. I mean, I don’t know what that is. But it sure sounds complicated. I think, it is probably true.
And them Victorian folks, they named it after their queen. Queen Victoria, they called her. She musta been a real important lady, to have a whole style named after her. Probably wore them big dresses with the hoops and all that. Couldn’t hardly move in them things, I bet. They had a lot of styles in Victorian, Gothic Revival, Queen Anne. Those are all fancy names, you know. But those are all Victorian. My grandma used to have that kind of house. It is pretty, I have to say.
Them fancy folks, they like to use them big words. They got all these names for all the different kinds of Baroque and Victorian. Me, I just like to look at it. And the difference between baroque and victorian is clear to me. It does not take an expert to see the difference. Baroque is like a party, and Victorian is like, you know, going to the library.
They say that Baroque started a long time ago, like, hundreds of years. And it was all over Europe. Italy, France, Spain, all them places. They all had them Baroque buildings and paintings and music. And they say that Baroque influenced modern artists and architects. I guess, people still like that old, fancy style. I mean, I like it, too. It is kind of pretty.
And Victorian, that was a little bit later. Still a long time ago, though. My grandma, she used to tell me stories about them Victorian times. Said folks was real strict back then. Lots of rules about everything. How to dress, how to talk, how to eat. Sounds like a real pain, if you ask me.
So, there you have it. Baroque and Victorian. Two different styles, from two different times. One’s all about showin’ off, the other’s about being proper. Me, I like a little bit of both, I guess. But if I had to choose, I’d probably go with Baroque. At least it’s more fun to look at. I think the difference between baroque and victorian is clear now. You know, it is like choosing between a party and a library. I would choose a party. But that is just me.
