You know that Kahlil Gibran, that fella, he made some pictures, right? Not just any pictures, these Kahlil Gibran artwork, they’re somethin’ else. I seen ’em, or at least pictures of ’em. They ain’t like the stuff you see at the county fair, no sir. These got somethin’ deep to ’em, somethin’ you gotta chew on a while.
This Gibran fella, he weren’t just good with a brush, he could write too. Wrote a book called The Prophet, they say. It sold more copies than there’s flies on a cow’s behind. 1923, that’s when they first put that book out. He’s from over there in Lebanon, came over here to make a name for himself, and boy, did he ever. Now you can see them pictures, his paintings, for sale. Ain’t cheap, though. You gotta have a good chunk of change to get one of them on your wall.
He was a Christian fella, a Maronite, whatever that is. But folks say he knew a thing or two about them Muslims, too. Even them Sufis, them’s the ones that whirl around like tops, right? Guess he mixed all that up in his head and it came out in them pictures he made. I seen some of his paintings, some with people, some with just shapes and colors.
I saw one, they called it “Towards the Infinite.” It was a picture of his mama, Kamila. Real pretty, even though she was gettin’ on in years, I reckon. He musta loved her somethin’ fierce to paint her like that. He painted a lot of pictures, I hear tell. At least 50 or so. You can find ’em all over the place now, on posters and such.

He had some pictures of him, too. One where he’s holdin’ a book, lookin’ all serious. That one was from way back, 1896. I weren’t even a twinkle in my daddy’s eye then! Another one, from 1926, just him, no book. He was older then, you could see it in his face. Still handsome, though.

Me? I like lookin’ at ’em, but I don’t need to own ’em. I got my memories, and that’s enough for me. But I can see why folks like ’em. They got a way of stickin’ with ya, them pictures. And that book, The Prophet, I hear it’s got some good words in it, too. Maybe I’ll have to get me a copy one of these days.
He’s got a whole bunch of those paintings and drawings. It is amazing. I can’t even draw a straight line, let alone make pictures like that. He sure was talented, that Kahlil Gibran. Yep, he sure was somethin’. His artwork is pretty, but they is expensive. You gotta be careful with your money, too.
