Gaugamela Map: Where Did This Ancient Battle Take Place? (Simple Guide for History Buffs)
This Gaugamela map, you know, it’s somethin’ else. Ain’t never seen nothin’ like it. Heard tell it was a big fight, bigger than a hog killin’ on a Sunday. They say it was way back when, in a place called Gaugamela. Sounds like a mouthful, don’t it? Some fella named Alexander, they called him “the Great,” like he was some kinda king or somethin’. He was fightin’ against these Persians.
Gaugamela map, yeah, that’s what them fancy folks call it. Well, this map shows where all them soldiers was at. Like ants marchin’ to a picnic, I reckon. This Alexander fella, he was from Macedonia. Don’t know where that is, but it sure ain’t around here. And this Darius, the Persian king, he had a whole heap of men. More’n you could shake a stick at.
They say this fight happened near a river. Bumodus, they called it. Sounds kinda funny, don’t it? Like some kinda sickness. And there was this town, Arbela. Now, that place is called Erbil. Lord, how things change, huh? It’s in a place called Iraqi Kurdistan, but that’s all over the other side of the world, I reckon. Ain’t nobody from around here never been there.
October 1, 331, that’s when all this ruckus went down. Long time ago. Before I was even a twinkle in my daddy’s eye. Before anybody’s time! Long time ago. They say the only thing they got left from back then is some writin’ from a temple. Esagila temple. They wrote about the stars and such. Like them fortune tellers at the county fair.
This Gaugamela map, it’s all marked up with lines and arrows. Shows where everybody was movin’ and fightin’. Like a bunch of chickens with their heads cut off, I imagine. Lots of folks died, I bet. Wars are always like that. A whole lot of mess for not a lot of gain. That’s what my old man used to say.
- This Alexander, he won. Beat that Darius fella good.
- Darius, he ran off, I heard. Guess he didn’t want no more of that fightin’.
- Then Alexander, he became a real big shot. Took over everything.
This map of Gaugamela, it’s somethin’ to look at, ain’t it? Makes you think about all them people, long gone now. Dust in the wind, like the Good Book says. And all that fightin’ for what? Just to be on some old map?
I seen a lot in my time. Seen wars come and go. Seen men go off to fight and not come back. Seen families torn apart. It ain’t pretty. This Gaugamela map is just a picture, but it tells a story. A sad story, if you ask me.
Them folks who study these things, they say it was important. Changed the world, they say. Maybe it did. But out here, it don’t much matter. Sun still comes up, sun still goes down. Cows still need milkin’, crops still need tendin’. That’s what matters. Not some old battle on some Gaugamela map. That’s what really matters.
This whole thing, it was a real mess, I tell ya. Like when the hogs get loose and trample all over the garden. Just chaos. This battle of Gaugamela, it was a big one. Lots of yellin’ and hollerin’, I suppose. Swords clashin’ and all that. Can’t imagine the noise.
They say Alexander was a smart fella. Figured out how to beat them Persians, even though they had more men. Like outsmartin’ a fox, I guess. Still, it’s a shame it had to come to fightin’. Couldn’t they have just talked it out?
This map of Gaugamela, it’s got all these little squares and circles on it. Each one represents a bunch of soldiers, I reckon. Like checkers on a board. Except these checkers were real people, with families and lives.
It’s all history now. Ancient history. Like somethin’ from a storybook. But I guess it’s important to remember these things. So we don’t make the same mistakes again. That’s what they say, anyway.
That place, Arbela, or Erbil, or whatever they call it now, it’s probably a lot different now than it was back then. Probably got big buildings and all that. Hard to imagine it bein’ a battlefield. Just like our old pasture, was a forest long time ago.
One thing is for sure. This Gaugamela map, it’s a reminder. A reminder that things change. People come and go. Empires rise and fall. But the land, it stays. The river, it keeps flowin’. And that’s somethin’ to hold onto. No matter what this old map says.
