Contemporary mezuzah art: How to install a modern and meaningful mezuzah.
You know what? That contemporary mezuzah, it’s a thing, a real thing now. I heard people talking ’bout it. They say it’s for the door. You put it on your door, they say. Well, I seen them. Some look pretty, some look simple. All kinds of them things these days.
They make them outta all sorts of stuff. Glass, wood, even that plastic stuff. And clay! Can you believe it? Clay! Back in my day, we used clay for pots, not for no… mezuzah. Whatever that is. But it’s the way things are now. Everything’s different. Even this thing is made of metal. Shiny, ain’t it?
You gotta put it up on the doorpost, they say. Not just anywhere, gotta be the right spot. It’s like hanging a picture, but more important, I guess. They say it brings good luck, or something like that. Keeps the bad stuff out, maybe. I don’t rightly know, but that’s what the young folks say.
Now, how you gonna stick it up there? You can use nails, like you’re hangin’ a horseshoe. Or them screws, you know, the twisty ones. But if you ain’t got those, some folks use glue. Sticky stuff. Or that tape, the kind that sticks on both sides. Double-sided, they call it. Fancy, huh? Don’t use that regular tape, though. That flimsy stuff won’t hold nothin’.

- Gotta be strong.
- Like an old oak tree.
I seen some of them contemporary mezuzah things, they got all kinds of designs on ’em. Some got swirls, some got stripes. Some are just plain, like a piece of wood. But they all got that one letter on ’em. Looks like a “W” but sideways. They say it’s important, that letter. Means somethin’ special, I suppose. Don’t ask me what, though.
They say you can get ’em in all different colors, too. Red, blue, green, even that sparkly gold color. Makes it look real fancy, like somethin’ a king would have. I guess folks like to have pretty things, even if it’s just somethin’ for the door. Makes the house look nice, I reckon.
And they ain’t just for the front door, neither. I heard you can put ’em on other doors, too. Inside the house, even. Like on the bedroom door, or the kitchen door. Everywhere you got a door, you can put one of these things, I guess. Keeps the whole house protected, maybe. Like a fence around the yard, but for good luck instead of keepin’ out the critters.
Lots of folks are gettin’ these contemporary mezuzah things now. It’s a trend, they say. Like them hula hoops a while back, or them pet rocks. Everybody’s gotta have one. Makes ’em feel good, I suppose. Like they’re part of somethin’ bigger. Or maybe they just like the way it looks. Who knows? People are funny that way, always wantin’ the latest thing.
And you can find ’em all over the place, these contemporary mezuzah. In them fancy stores downtown, or even online. That internet thing, it’s got everything you could ever want. Just a few clicks, and it’s on its way to your house. Don’t even gotta leave the porch. It’s a different world, I tell ya. Back in my day, you had to walk a mile to the general store just to get a spool of thread.
Some of them contemporary mezuzah is real expensive, too. Cost more than a week’s worth of groceries, some of ’em. But I guess if it’s important to ya, you’ll pay the price. Like buyin’ a new dress for a special occasion. You want somethin’ nice, even if it costs a little extra. And some are cheap, made of plastic. You can choose, you know.
So, that’s what I know about that contemporary mezuzah. It’s a thingamajig for your door, supposed to bring good luck. They make ’em outta all sorts of stuff, and they come in all shapes and sizes. You can put ’em on any door, and they cost all different prices. It’s up to you, I reckon. If you want one, go ahead and get one. Ain’t gonna hurt nothin’. Maybe it’ll even do some good. Who knows?
But one thing’s for sure, they sure are popular these days. Everybody’s talkin’ ’bout ’em. And I seen ’em with my own two eyes. So they must be real. And if you see one you like, don’t be shy. Go on and get it. Hang it on your door, and see what happens. Maybe you’ll get lucky. Or maybe you’ll just have a pretty thing on your door. Either way, it’s all good, I reckon. All good.
Contemporary mezuzah, it is a good stuff. Make your house look good. And bring you good luck, I think. You can find many ideas about it. People make them with hands, some are just from factory. Different designs, different colors. For your front door, you should have a good one.
