How to identify hundred years war armor: Learn how to become a real expert.
This here, it’s about that Hundred Years War armor. My old man used to talk about wars, bless his soul. Said they was always fightin’ over somethin’. This one, they fought for a long, long time. More’n a hundred years, can you believe it? Called it the Hundred Years War, but it was even longer than that, imagine!
They was fightin’ over who got to be king of France, I reckon. England and France, always at each other’s throats. Like two old hens fightin’ over a worm. And they fought and fought. Lots of fellas died, I expect.
Now, about that armor. See, in them days, they had these fellas called knights. Big strong fellas, rode horses. They wore this armor, metal stuff, all over ’em. Made ’em look like shiny beetles. Protected ’em, you see. Like a turtle in its shell. That was the hundred years war plate armor, strong and heavy.
First, they had this chain mail, like a metal shirt. That was before the hundred years war armor, they put it on and fought each other. Then they got smarter, I guess. Made plates, big pieces of metal, shaped like a man. Covered ’em up good. Hard to get hurt when you’re all covered in metal. They changed it during the hundred years war. Changed how they fought, too, maybe.
- Chain mail shirt – like a metal fishnet, kinda.
- Plate armor – big pieces of metal, all put together.
- Helmet – kept their heads safe, most of the time.
- Shield – big piece of metal to hide behind.
But them English, they had these longbows. Big bows, longer than a man is tall. Could shoot arrows real far. Faster than the French, too. And they had lots of these bowmen. More bowmen than knights. Made it hard for the French, I reckon. They used these bows to shoot at the knights in their fancy armor.
Those knights, they weren’t so tough when those arrows came flyin’. Like rain, I imagine. All that metal didn’t help so much then. Some say that’s when the knights started to matter less. All that hundred years war armor, no match for a good bow and arrow. Them longbows changed things, you see.
They had some groups of fellas, lived like them old-timey folks. Show you how they lived back then. One group, they called ’em La Belle Compagnie, or somethin’ like that. They dressed up like them English soldiers from the Hundred Years War. Showed you how they fought, what they ate, all that stuff.
I seen some books, too, about this hundred years war armor. One was called “Building Medieval Plate Armor: An Operator’s Guide.” Sounds complicated, don’t it? Like buildin’ a tractor, but with metal plates instead of engine parts. They teach you how to make it and use it in the book, like an instruction.
Another one, “How Shall a Man Be Armed? Evolution of Armor during the Hundred Years War.” That’s a mouthful, ain’t it? But it tells you how the armor changed during that long war. From that chain mail stuff to the plate armor. They kept makin’ it better, I guess. To make their soldiers safer, hope they can win the war.
They was fightin’ back then, changed the way they fought, too. Used to be all about them knights, all fancy in their armor. But then them longbows came along, and things changed. They started fightin’ more like regular folks, I guess. Not so much fancy armor, more just fightin’. It makes the hundred years war interesting.
Well, that’s all I know about that hundred years war armor. Lots of fightin’, lots of metal. And them longbows. Changed the way they fought, they did. Just like everything else, things change. Even war, I guess. It’s a long time ago. I don’t know much about it. But it’s interesting.
I remember one book, somethin’ about “I can piss on Calais from Dover.” Don’t know what that means, but it was about that war, I reckon. Sounds rude, don’t it? But that’s how them soldiers talked, I guess. Rough bunch. They fought hard, that’s for sure. Fighting with their hundred years war plate armor, with bows and arrows, with swords and shields.
Anyways, that’s my story about the Hundred Years War armor. Hope you learned somethin’. It’s a long time ago, but folks still remember it. They write books about it, make movies about it. Guess it’s important, in some way. Just a little bit history. Hope you like it. I tried to make it simple. Maybe it is not that accurate, but it is what I know.
