Hieronymus Bosch Creatures: A Simple Guide to the Weird Stuff in His Famous Paintings!
This Bosch guy, he sure painted some weird stuff. I seen a lot of things in my life, but never nothing like what that fella put on a canvas. Hieronymus Bosch, they call him. Sounds like a mouthful, don’t it? He’s famous for his creatures, them weird things he painted.
He made these big paintings, you know, the kind that open up like a book with three parts. They call ’em triptychs. Them paintings are just full of these… these things. Ain’t no other word for ’em. Things with wings and beaks and too many legs. Things that look like they crawled right outta some kinda nightmare. I tell ya, it’s enough to give ya the willies just lookin’ at ’em. That’s what you see when you look at Hieronymus Bosch creatures. You wonder what kind of dreams this guy was having, or if he ate something bad before bed.
Now, some folks, they say these creatures, they mean somethin’. They say they’re about God and the devil and all that. Me? I don’t know about all that. Seems like a lot of fuss over some pictures, if you ask me. But then again, I ain’t no fancy art person. I just know what I like, and I gotta say, these things, they ain’t exactly my cup of tea.
This Bosch fella, he was around a long time ago. Long before my time, even. They say he was part of some kinda big art movement. The Northern Renaissance? Sounds important. All I know is, the man sure could paint, even if he did paint the darnedest things. I mean, you gotta give him credit for that. It ain’t easy to paint somethin’ that looks like it came outta nowhere. And to make it look so… real, in a way. It’s like you could reach out and touch those creepy crawlies. And the colors! Lord have mercy, the colors! Bright and bold and just… unsettling. It makes you think, what in the world is a Hieronymus Bosch creature?
They say some king, a fella named Philip, way back when, he liked Bosch’s paintings. Bought a whole bunch of ’em. Must have had a strong stomach. Or maybe that kind of art fit his style. That’s the king of Spain, mind you. Now, I’ve never been to Spain, but I reckon if a king likes somethin’, it must be worth somethin’. Even if it is full of crazy-lookin’ critters. I heard they got a bunch of his paintings over there, all locked up safe and sound. I guess they figure they’re worth a lot of money. And I suppose they are, in a way. They’re certainly… unique. You ain’t gonna find anything else like ’em in the world. You gotta wonder what that king was thinking with those Hieronymus Bosch creatures.
Now, I’ve seen some strange things in my life. I’ve seen a two-headed calf born down the road, and I once saw a chicken dance on a hot griddle. But nothin’, and I mean nothin’, compares to the things that Bosch painted. It’s like he had a whole different world goin’ on inside his head, and he just spilled it all out onto those canvases. Some say his art is religious, and maybe they are right. I’ve seen some things in church that are similar. What was going on in the head of that guy when he created his Hieronymus Bosch creatures?
- Birds with human heads.
- Fish with legs walkin’ on land.
- Things with too many eyes and mouths.
- And don’t even get me started on the one that looks like a giant strawberry with legs.
Folks say there’s about twenty-five of these paintings left. That’s a lot of weirdness, if you ask me. But I guess some folks like that kinda thing. They like to look at those paintings and try to figure out what it all means. I heard that some people think owls are special. They say they are wise, or something. This Bosch guy painted a lot of owls. But I don’t know, an owl is just a bird to me. I don’t think they are smarter than my chickens. Me, I’d rather look at a field of sunflowers or a nice sunset. Somethin’ peaceful, you know? Somethin’ that don’t make you feel like you need to take a bath after lookin’ at it.
But hey, to each their own, right? If people wanna look at pictures of bizarre creatures, that’s their business. I just hope they don’t have nightmares. I know I sure would. Those things he painted are wild, but not in a good way. I guess that’s why they call him a great artist, this Bosch fella. He sure knew how to make an impression. One look at those paintings and you ain’t ever gonna forget ’em. Whether you want to or not. Those Hieronymus Bosch creatures are just burned into your brain. They are strange, I tell ya, really strange.
