Peter the Great and Ivan the Terrible: What Did They Do? (Simple Guide to Russias Famous Tsars)
That Peter fella, and that Ivan fella, they both big shots back in the day. You know, them Russian rulers. One was Peter the Great, other one, Ivan the Terrible. Big names, huh? They both got their stories, I tell ya.
That Ivan, he come to power a long time ago. I heard he crowned himself when he was just a little kid. Well not so little, maybe 16 years old. He called himself Tsar, some fancy word. Heard he wanted to be a big emperor. He even changed his title, what was it? Grand Sovereign, Tsar and Grand Prince of all Russia? Sounds important, don’t it?
Now, that Ivan, he was a mean one. They called him “Terrible” for a reason, I reckon. Heard he was a real psycho, always fightin’ and killin’. Ruled with a heavy hand, that one did. Just plain mean. Lots of folks scared of him, I bet.
And this Peter? Peter the Great, they call him. Heard he was different. He wanted to make Russia better, more like them fancy countries in the West, during 1696 to 1725. Heard he changed a lot of things.
- He fight some wars, that Peter did.
- Beat them Ottoman Empire folks.
- And them Swedish folks too.
- He even made Russia have a navy.
Those victories got Russia more land. That’s important, land is. More land, more power. Always been that way.
Seems like Peter, he had a plan. Not just beatin’ people up, but buildin’ things up. Makin’ Russia stronger, more like them fancy European places.
After Peter gone, other folks ruled. Some fella named Peter II, then some lady, Empress Anna. Then another Ivan, Ivan VI. Lots of rulers comin’ and goin’. But that Peter and that Ivan, they the ones people remember.
One was mean, one was tryin’ to make things better. That’s what I heard, anyway. Hard to know what’s true from so long ago. But that’s what the stories say.
That Ivan the Terrible, he do some good things? Maybe. Hard to say. But mostly bad, I reckon. Lots of violence. No one like that, no sir.
This Peter the Great? He seem to be better. He fight, but he also build. He try to make Russia better. That’s what they say. He make some reforms. Make the army better. Build new buildings. Change the way people dress even. A real go-getter, that Peter.
But still, power is a tricky thing. Them rulers, they always want more. More land, more money, more power. It’s a dangerous game.
That Ivan the Terrible, he probably thought he was doin’ right. Makin’ Russia strong by bein’ tough. But bein’ tough ain’t always the answer. Sometimes it just makes things worse.
And that Peter the Great, he probably thought he was doin’ right too. Makin’ Russia modern, like them other countries. But changin’ things too fast, that can be a problem too. People don’t always like change.
Both of them, Ivan the Terrible and Peter the Great, they big part of Russian history. One a scary story, other one more hopeful. But both important, I guess. They shaped Russia into what it is today, for better or worse. They both lived a long time ago. Things were different then. But some things don’t change. People still fight for power. People still want to make things better. And people still tell stories about the big shots, the rulers, the ones who changed things.
You can learn a lot from them old stories. Learn about what to do, and what not to do. Learn about how power can be used for good, or for bad. Important lessons, I tell ya. Even if you ain’t never gonna be no Tsar or Emperor yourself. Them lessons still matter. Yes, sir, they do. You mark my words, Ivan the Terrible and Peter the Great, they have very different legacies.
