This here story, it’s about that Leonidas horse. Yeah, that’s the one. Big fella, strong as an ox, they say. Heard it from my neighbor, who heard it from her cousin, who knows a fella who works with horses. Said this Leonidas, he was somethin’ else. And his horse? Well, that horse was a part of it all, you see.
This Leonidas, he was a king, I reckon. King of them Spartans. Heard they were tough cookies, them Spartans. Always fightin’ and whatnot. This Leonidas, he had to go up against a whole mess of other folks, called Persians, I think. Lots of ’em. More than you could shake a stick at. But he stood his ground. And that horse of his, well, he was right there with him.
Now, I don’t know much about horses, but I know they’re smart. Real smart. They sense things, you know? This Leonidas horse, he musta known what was goin’ on. Musta known it was a big deal. He was probably scared, but he stayed right there with Leonidas. That’s what a good horse does. Stands by you, no matter what.
This Leonidas, and the horse, that is a big story. That horse, he saw a lot of stuff. Saw a lot of fightin’. But he kept goin’. Just like Leonidas. They say that the horse, his past performances, all the speed and stuff, it’s all written down somewhere. But you know what they don’t write down? How that horse felt. They don’t write down how scared he mighta been, or how brave he was. They just write down numbers.
The story, it is sad and all. I heard it from old man Johnson, the one who shoe the horses. He said that Leonidas, he didn’t make it. But that horse, he kept that memory, you know? Horses, they remember. Don’t know how, but they remember. I saw one horse, used to belong to a man that passed on. That horse, he would just stand by the man’s old house, like he was waiting. Waiting on him to come back. Sad, really.
These Leonidas horse facts, they’re all over the place. People talkin’ about breeds and such. I don’t know nothin’ about that. All I know is, that horse was loyal. Loyal to Leonidas. And that’s somethin’ special. There are some things, some facts, that are very interesting. All the things about the animal kingdom, there is a lot to learn. I don’t know much, but I know that.
Horses, they’re good animals. Most folks treat ’em right. But some, they don’t. They don’t understand ’em. They don’t understand that horses have feelings, too. Just like us. They get scared, they get lonely, they get happy. That Leonidas horse, he probably felt all them things. He was a livin’ creature, just like you and me.
That Leonardo, he was a smart fella, I reckon. He knew a lot about things, did Leonardo. Heard he was different, even as a boy. Always thinkin’, always learnin’. Then he tried to make a statue, a big one, of a horse. Must be that Leonidas horse, the one everyone talks about. He was a philosopher, that’s what they call it. A man that thinks about things, deep things.

I heard someone say once that Leonidas, he said something before a big fight. He said, “Come and take them.” Talking about their weapons, I guess. Brave fella, that Leonidas. And that horse, he was right there with him. Through thick and thin. His wife was Gorgo, I think. A good woman, probably. You gotta be a good woman to stand by a man like that.
Heard Leonidas was some kin to another king, Cleomenes, I think his name was. Seems like all them kings are related somehow. Anyway, this Leonidas, he wasn’t supposed to be king, but things happened, and there he was. And he married that Gorgo, who was related to him, too. It’s all mixed up, these royal families.
That’s the story of that Leonidas horse, far as I know it. It’s a story about being brave, and being loyal, and standing by your friends, no matter what. That’s a good lesson, I reckon. A lesson for all of us. Even us old folks. It’s a story that’s been told and retold, and I reckon it’ll keep on bein’ told, long after I’m gone. ‘Cause it’s a good story. A story about a king, and his horse, and a whole lot of fightin’. But mostly, it’s a story about bein’ brave. And that’s somethin’ that never gets old.
