Eh, let’s talk about them Canadian abstract artists, those folks who make them crazy paintings. Now, I ain’t no expert, but I’ve seen a few things in my time, and let me tell ya, some of these pictures are real head-scratchers. But, they are kinda special too.
What’s this Abstract Art Anyway?
This abstract art, it ain’t like paintin’ a bowl of fruit or a pretty sunset. It’s more like, well, it’s more like they just throw colors on the canvas and see what happens. But, ya know, some folks, they really like it. And Canada, they got a whole bunch of these Canadian abstract artists.
They say Canada is a real good place for these artist folks. Lots of them art houses, museums, and whatnot. They say Canada got a whole mess of art history, way back to when them Europeans first came over. They painted like their folks back home at first, but then they started paintin’ the trees and the lakes and all that. Then, somewhere along the line, they started with this abstract stuff.
Some Big Shot Canadian Painters
I heard about this one fella, Lawren Harris, they say he was a big shot. Famous Canadian painter, they call him. He probably painted some of them crazy pictures too, but I reckon he was pretty good at it if everyone’s makin’ such a fuss. Heck, there are tons of these Canadian abstract artist folks. I seen a list once, it had, like, ninety-three names on it. Ninety-three! Can you believe it? That’s a whole lot of people paintin’ pictures that look like, well, like nothin’ much, but somethin’ at the same time, ya know?
Lots of different stuff they paint, too. Some do animals, but not like real animals, more like how they feel about animals, with all sorts of colors and shapes. Some just do colors, no shapes at all, just big blobs of this and that. They are Canadian abstract artists. They don’t just paint, though. Some of ’em, they do that drawin’ stuff, some make them statues, and some even take pictures. Imagine that, abstract pictures!
Why Do They Do It?
I don’t rightly know why they do it. Maybe they see the world different than the rest of us. Maybe they’re tryin’ to tell us somethin’, but they don’t wanna use words. Or maybe they just like the colors. Who knows? But people sure seem to like it. They go to them art houses and stare at these paintings for hours. And they buy ’em, too. Spend good money on ’em, from what I hear. Enough to buy a good cow, I bet.
Canada is full of these abstract artists. All over the place, from one side to the other. Some people say these paintings show us new things about paintin’. They say it’s like they’re showin’ us the old stuff in a new way. Like, they take the regular way of paintin’ and turn it inside out, like an old sock. And they say it’s important, somethin’ about showin’ how they feel about things, how they see things. I don’t know about all that, but I guess it’s somethin’ to think about.
It is Good to Support them Canadian Artists
They say we should support these artists, buy their stuff, go to their shows. I reckon that’s a good thing. It ain’t easy makin’ a livin’ paintin’ pictures, ‘specially when they look like somethin’ a chicken coulda walked on. But they’re tryin’, and they’re doin’ somethin’ different. It is good to support them Canadian artists.

These Artists are Everywhere
These Canadian abstract artists, they’re like weeds, I tell ya. They’re everywhere. They say Canada has more of ’em than any other place. Seems like every town’s got at least one fella paintin’ them crazy pictures. And they all do it different. Some use them bright colors, some use them dark colors, some use both. Some paint big, some paint small. But they all got that same thing, that same way of lookin’ at the world that’s different from the rest of us. They can make a famous painting.
Now, I ain’t sayin’ I understand it all. I still like a good picture of a cow or a barn better than most of this abstract stuff. But I reckon there’s room for all kinds of art in this world. And these Canadian folks, they sure are makin’ their mark. They’re showin’ the world that there’s more than one way to paint a picture, more than one way to see the world. And maybe that’s a good thing. Maybe we all need to look at things a little different sometimes.
So, next time you see one of them abstract paintings, don’t just laugh it off. Take a minute and look at it. Think about what the artist might be tryin’ to say. You might be surprised at what you find. Or you might just think it’s a bunch of hooey. But either way, it’s somethin’ to think about. And that’s somethin’, ain’t it?
